The Queen Mother had suffered from the constant cold she had caught during Christmas 2001. She was bedridden in Sandringham after her last public engagement on November 22, 2001, when she attended the resignation of HMS Ark Royal. However, despite many other unscheduled events - such as the celebration of Alice's 100th birthday, Duchess of Gloucester, on December 12, 2001; the annual Women's Institute lunch, where she became President, on January 23, 2002, and traditional church service at Sandringham - she was determined to attend the funeral of her younger daughter, Princess Margaret. On February 13 she sneaks into her living room at Sandringham, causing great concern to her daughter, Queen, and the entire royal family, but she goes to Windsor by helicopter the next day. He attended the funeral on February 15 on an aircraft carrier with a dark window, (just used by Margaret) sheltered from the press according to his wishes so no pictures of him in a wheelchair could be taken. He then returned to the Royal Lodge. On March 5, 2002, she had lunch at Eton Beagles' annual grass party, and watched Cheltenham's match on television; but his health quickly deteriorated during his final weeks after retreating to the Lodge for the last time. He grew weaker throughout March 2002, and died at 15:15 GMT on March 30 (Easter Saturday) with his surviving daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, by her bedside.

The Empress Mother's body was lying on the altar of the All Saints Chapel of the Royal near the Royal Lodge before being brought to London because she was lying in the state and the cemetery. At one point, four grandchildren Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Viscount Linley mounted the guards as a sign of respect - an honor similar to the Vigil of the Prince in a lie in the state of King George V. An estimated 200,000 people over three days passed him as he lying in the state at Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster.

The order of published services included as the introductory verse that begins "You can shed tears that he has gone away" (attributed to the anonymous author) chosen by the Queen. This verse became very popular after the funeral, and was later revealed based on a poem written about 20 years earlier by David Harkins, an aspiring artist from Carlisle. Andrew Motion who previously wrote poems to weed Prince Edward, the 100th anniversary of Queen Mother, and the death of Princess Margaret, released an elegant in honor of the Grand Empress. Both the Queen and the Prince of Wales pay homage to the Queen Mother in a separate television broadcast.
