Main characters

Maggie Beare [nÃÆ' Â © e Lapsy] (Ruth Cracknell)

Margaret May "Maggie" Beare, is a widow of World War II veteran Leo, mother of Robert and Arthur, Lorna's sister and grandmother to Damien and Teonie. Maggie (Cracknell) is in the early stages of some form of dementia and her younger son Arthur lives together and takes care of her. But, even more forgetfully, Maggie was clear enough to manipulate Arthur when she wanted it, usually for something evil that would be very troublesome. Maggie was a nurse and met Leo while caring for her from a war wound.

Arthur Beare (Garry McDonald)

The young boys Maggie and Leo, Robert's brother, uncle to Damien and Teonie and Deidre's ex-husband recently. Arthur (McDonald) is an editor and journalist for newspapers. When she is not working, she is usually at home attending to her naughty and increasingly confused demands. He drove a convertible 1955 Morris Seller II convertible, having trouble bringing dates back home due to her deliberate interventions, and almost always thwarted by Maggie every time she tried to socialize with her co-workers. Maggie often cursed Arthur, labeling all her future boyfriends as "floozies", dubbed "Artie" by Robert's brother.

Robert Beare (Henri Szeps)

Elder's sons Maggie and Leo, brother of Arthur, husband to Liz and father Damien and Teonie. Robert is a successful dentist who likes to take a lot of vacations and has an extramarital affair. He did so by disguising his overseas holiday trism as a dental research conference. Her mother said she went for her woman and said that that was the reason she failed medical school, much to the disappointment of her late father. He is a 'casual person' who is adept at giving reasons why Arthur and not him should take primary care from their elderly mother. Robert likes to play tennis and golf and throughout the show, has three cars; Jaguar, Volvo, and BMW. When Arthur asked him to borrow to buy a new car, all that Robert would offer him was a seriously flawed Volvo at a discount. Liz Bearing (Judy Morris)

Robert's wife, mother of Damien and Teonie. The long-suffering Liz (Morris) is very conscious of his husband's business but it is difficult to prove one of them, because of Robert's good skills in covering them up. So in the meantime, Liz compensated by spending Robert's money and socializing with his rich, bored and unhappy friends. He sometimes sought entertainment from Arthur, using behaviors that could indicate that he was attracted to him. He is often, as insensitive and self-centered as Robert and desperate to put Maggie at home. Liz has a verbal accent, and is often heard saying "Oh Gawd" or "You're weird Arthur".
