Plot

Claire (Julie Bowen) and Gloria (Sofa Vergara) want to spend this mother's day outdoors with hiking with the kids, but the quarrels and complaints push Claire and Gloria to the edge. Both could not hear them complain again, so they left them back waiting for the two of them to finish their ascent and then return home. As they climb, Claire convinces Gloria to admit that even Manny (Rico Rodriguez) sometimes drives her crazy. Gloria says that sometimes she needs her own space and that Manny has to go out and play with other kids. He also said that Manny's poetry is not so good, something Manny had not overheard since he followed them in the ascent. Manny was annoyed and Gloria tried to make things right.

Meanwhile, Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould) while they wait for the others to return, they realize that Claire is always trying to make them feel guilty as a way to apologize to her. They decided that this time they would not do it because if they did, they would let him win once more.

Meanwhile, Phil (Ty Burrell) and Jay (Ed O'Neill) live at home to cook a nice dinner for the family. They make special recipes that Jay's mom used to make. Things got very strange when Phil found a poem that Jay wrote for his mother when he was nine years old and when he read it aloud he witnessed an unexpected emotional reaction from Jay.

At Tucker-Pritchett's house, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) tries to show his appreciation to Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) by bringing him breakfast in bed on Mother's Day, causing Cameron to worry about gender roles in relation to Mitchell. Things got worse when later, when visiting the park, all other families treated Cameron because she became Lily's mother too.

At the end of the episode, the whole family gathered for a special dinner provided by Jay and Phil. Phil tells everyone that Jay cried when they were cooking because he remembered his mother, something that made Jay angry and denied that he was crying. During dinner, when Jay tries to tell the story of his mother, he starts crying again and everyone comes to embrace him. Haley and Alex, seeing Jay cry, apologize to Claire for having destroyed her special day.
