A baby shower is a way to celebrate the expected birth or give birth to a child by giving a gift to the mother at a party, while another culture organizes a baby shower to celebrate the transformation of a woman into a mother. This event has different names in different cultures.

Etymology
The term bath is often assumed to mean that the expected mother is "showered" with a gift. A related habit, called a bridal shower, may have gained its name from the custom in the 19th century for a gift to be put into an umbrella, which when opened will "shower" bridal candidates with gifts. Or the term might show the "first show" of the new baby to the wider family and circle of friends.

Description
Traditionally, baby showers are only provided for the first child of the family, and only invited women, although this has changed in recent years, now allows bathing to be separated for different audiences: workplace, mixed-sex, and feminist. Activities in the baby shower include gift giving and playing themed games.
Baby shower games vary, sometimes including standard games such as bingo, and sometimes pregnancy themes, such as "guess the size of a mother" or "guess the baby". This game helps let close friends attend the bond with their mom, and allows the new family to thank them in advance, find out who is willing and able to help them with the challenge of raising a child.
According to the etiquette authority, Miss Manners, since the party center rewards, baby showers are usually arranged and organized by close friends rather than family members, as it is considered impolite for families to ask for gifts on behalf of their members. However, these habits vary by culture or region and in some ways are expected and customary for close female family members to host baby showers, often the grandmother of the baby's mother.
When the baby shower is held after the birth of the baby, invitations to attend the shower can be combined with the announcement of the baby. In the US, if a baby shower does not occur before the baby arrives, a sip-and-see party or other similar event may be arranged after birth.
Gift
Guests bring small gifts for pregnant women. Mothers are usually given pampering treatments. Typical baby-related gifts include diapers, blankets, baby bottles, clothing, and toys. It is common to open gifts during parties; sometimes the host will make a game to open the prize.
Family bond
Baby showers are the family's first chance to gather people together to help play a role in their child's life. New parents may want to invite people to help raise their child, and help educate children from time to time. People around the family, who care about them, want to get involved in children's lives, and baby showers provide an opportunity for them to give gifts and help, showing their love for the family. If it happens before birth, it allows the new family to thank everyone before the stress of the new baby and sleep deprivation begin.
History
The term "baby shower" is relatively new, but the celebrations and rituals associated with pregnancy and childbirth are both ancient and eternal.
- Ancient India
- In India, the pregnancy ritual has been followed since the Vedic era: an event called seemantha, held on the 6th or 8th month. The prospective mother is bombarded with dried fruits, candies, and other gifts that help her baby grow. A musical event to please the baby's ears is the culmination of the ritual, as it is common knowledge that the baby's ears will begin to function in the womb. Rituals pray for healthy babies and mothers, as well as happy delivery and motherhood.
- Ancient Egypt
- In ancient Egypt, rituals associated with the birth of a child occurred after the event itself. Unlike modern baby baths, this involves mothers and children separated to "contain and eliminate birth pollution" - this may include visiting a local shrine or shrine. After this, there may also be household rituals going on, but the specifications have been found to be difficult to learn because this is a women-centered event.
- Ancient Greek
- The ancient Greeks also celebrated pregnancy after birth, with shouting ( oloyge ) after the end of labor, to show that "peace has arrived". Five to seven days later, there is a ceremony called Amphidromia , to show that the baby has been integrated into the household. In a rich family, public dekate ceremony, after ten days, shows the mother's return to society. (The ten-day period is still observed in modern Iran.)
- Medieval Europe
- Due to the likelihood that a mother will die in childbirth, this time is recognized as having a great spiritual risk hazard in addition to the risk of physical harm. Priests often visit women during labor so they can confess their sins. After birth, usually on the same day, the baptismal ceremony will take place for the baby. In this ceremony, the godparents will reward the child, including a pair of silver spoons.
- Renaissance Europe
- Pregnancy is currently celebrated with many different children from birth gifts: functional items, such as wooden trays and bowls, as well as paintings, sculptures, and food. Childbirth is considered almost mystical, and the prospective mother is often surrounded with references to the Gospel of Joy through encouragement and celebration.
- Victorian Britain and North America
- Victorian women will keep their pregnancy a secret, upholding a proper standard of behavioral culture, but once the baby is born, other women often have tea parties for new mothers. Superstition sometimes causes speculation that a woman may be pregnant, like two teaspoons accidentally placed together on a plate. Gifts are usually handmade, but grandma will give you silver.
- Modern North America
- With the consumer ideologies of the 1950s and 1960s, modern baby showers began in the baby boom and served the function of providing mothers and their homes with material goods. It started the tradition of "showering" mothers with gifts, and brought a more relaxed atmosphere with regards to pregnancy.
- While continuing the tradition of the 1950s, modern technology has changed the shape taken by baby showers: games can include identifying baby parts in sonograms, and when traditional baby baths are exclusive women, mixed-sex baths have been increased in prevalence.
In different countries
Some baby showers are directed at future fathers. It may be more beer-oriented, watching sports, fishing, or playing video games. The main properties of this gift are diapers and/or diaper-related items. Diaper organizations are usually performed by foster dad friends as a way to help prepare for the upcoming child. These parties can be held at a local pub/bar, friend's house, or grandpa's soon-to-be-arrived home. In the UK, this is called wetting baby's head , and is seen more often than baby showers. Wet the baby's head traditionally when the father celebrates birth by drinking a few glasses with a group of friends.
There is some controversy about this, with Judith Martin calling them "terrible coercion", although she refers to the demanding gifts and not necessarily the male version of the baby shower.
Name for event
- Diapers refers to small-scale baby showers, generally for later children, when parents do not need a lot of baby gear.
- Grandma's bathroom refers to a bathroom where people bring things for grandparents to stay in their homes, like a folded bed and changing base.
- Spraying is a small rain for the next child, especially a child of a different gender than the previous breed.
