Plot
Tommy Tanner (Wheeler) and Egbert G. Higginbotham (Woolsey) are two vaudevillians who were kicked out of the last city they did. After fleeing to Lockville town, the duo were friends with Mother Talley's elderly widow (Lucy Beaumont). Mom is angry because she can not bring customers to her drug store. In addition, Mother owes the payment on the bank note to Harry Watters (Jason Robards). Tommy and Egbert decided to turn Mother's store into a money-making business, even producing their own afternoon radio program at the store. Harry, who wanted to buy the store as part of a smuggling operation, tried to sell a duo of alcoholic beverages, calling it a "lemon syrup". "Syrup" gets praise from everyone in town, until police appear to close the operation. Tommy and Egbert were suspicious of Harry, and it was up to them to find Harry, clean up their names, and store Mother's store.
