History
EBMCH in Baardheere, Somalia was founded in May 2006. Bardera does not have anything resembling a maternity house for a long time before EBMCH gets into the picture. Bardera is home to the largest and most densely populated district of Gedo Region.
UN agencies such as WHO, UNICEF and other international NGOs such as MSF have supported health care services conducted in Bardera District. Recently in 2007, Medicines Sans Frontier (MSF) of Spain, has been trying to equip, supply and re-supply the main Non-functioning Bardera Hospital since 1994. Several armed militias have blocked this noble cause. EBMCH and two other MCHs with fewer resources are the only medical center serving the city of Bardera.
The majority of medicines, medical supplies, and information come from friends from hospitals living in the United States and Canada. The hospital has some of the most up-to-date equipment in all KIAs in Bardera City. The public hospital that served the community for 40 years before was destroyed by the central government in 1991.
Trained medical staff working for the same purpose and safe drugs from Canada and the United States make East Bardera Hospital one of the best managed KIA in Somalia. All beds in the hospital are welded by local entrepreneurs, and as expansion is sought to serve the community further, more supplies will be purchased from business people.

Creation of Bardera Maternity Hospital
East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital is envisaged as a step-by-step and long-term medical facility where the basic medical needs of Gedo's largest city will be fulfilled. With the support of several friends, including Dr. Aden Loyan and trained nurse, EBMCH founders can pay for all EBMCH expenses including medicines and medical supplies, facility rental, and staff salaries. The annual operating costs for Bardera Maternity Hospital are slightly above $ 30,000.
The founder of EBMCH recounted the story of a woman who in early 2006 had received financial support from family members abroad and after a relatively normal pregnancy, gave birth and nearly died of subsequent bleeding, received no immediate medical advice and no recovery assistance in what form even. in Bardera. Then the question, "Imagine, what did other women experience in similar situations across Somalia and in Bardera?" requested.
The woman in the story, How EBMCH Got Started , can buy medical supplies like supplements long before she gets weak and can also get nutritional advice, but there is no maternity hospital in Bardera at the time. It can be concluded that other women suffer many times worse. Therefore, he started creating EBMCH with several thousand dollars in hand. First, as a maternity hospital, and secondly, as a place with knowledgeable staff who can offer all possible medical services to the community. For the locals, EBMCH is more than just a place for women and children. All kinds of people seek medical services from EBMCH. Among other things, non-expired medicines and reliable midwifery services are some of the most preferred services and attractions in EBMCH.
Proper nutrition information and basic prenatal services will be helpful for pregnant women in Bardera as most food is available in most farming towns. More than 96% of households in Bardera buy their household food needs. [1]

Expect breastfeeding mothers and women also get reliable supplements and medicines as well as medical advice throughout pregnancy and after the child is born. EBMCH has pharmacies and supplies are being imported from Canada and the US with the help of EBMCH friends and local NGOs. Red Crescent Bardera donated supplements to EBMCH, and the Nairobi-based UNICEF arm provided some medical supplies to EBMCH in early 2007.
EBMCH as a maternity hospital
East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital was originally regarded as a maternity hospital but the community's need for extensive medical care facilities is an urgent need that requires urgent solutions. Currently, all women and mothers can get medical advice and relatively inexpensive treatment. UNICEF has given EBMCH some supplements to expect new women and mothers. Nurses make scheduled visits to new mom homes where they provide basic medical services including free supplements for mothers and new babies.
The name EBMCH has been changed to Maternity Bardera Hospital and Children . Initially, the name of the hospital included the word "east", both sides of Bardera are now served by the maternity hospital and these children since December 2008. Therefore, the name changed.
Because there are no functioning health services, hospital staff do anything that can help improve public health, in particular, the health of women and children. Prevention of problems is the purpose of staff at East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital.

Until the end of 2007, no other MCHs in Bardera have offered full maternity services and this has staffed the Eastern Bardera Maternal and Child Hospital in their efforts to provide delivery services for women across the city. Data collected by staff shows nearly 3000 well-assisted women at EBMCH facilities or in their own homes. The lack of emergency vehicles makes up half of the women who are given birth services to deliver at home.
2009 and 2010
Armed opposition groups made Bardera one of their crucial war fronts in early 2009. Most public services including hospitals and schools were closed for long periods of time. Inventory becomes difficult to bring in. There is a lot of chaos and discomfort for residents and service providers in the region.

Maternity Unit Bardera West
The western side of Bardera has a new maternity unit. This unit opened on 13 December 2008. Present at the opening of this unit, is the head of the Bardera Council of Elders, Hussein Ali Bihi. This unit has a staff of three people. One of the most preferred midwives in Bardera, Fadumo Mohamed Elmi and his assistant Nimo Ibrahim Afyare will be the two who run the Western Pregnant Bardera Unit.
Midwife Fadumo Mohamed Elmi has been serving Bardera for decades. East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital is happy to have him on board at this stage. One of the best things that will happen now is that both midwives, Markabo Bilal Kulow and Fadumo Mohamed Elmi will train new midwives, so the area will always have new help. East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital and the new Bardera Poytechnic College, combined with the experience of Markabo and Fadumo, women in the Bardera region will have better health services.
Most of the services and businesses in Bardera are located on the east side of the city but residents on the western side of Bardera have been increasing for two decades now. Director of East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital, Fardowsa Abdinur Hashi and his staff always provide the best for health services directed at residents on the west side of Bardera. Two Units, one to the east and a new west side unit will have close cooperation in terms of scheduled work, inventory, and joint training.
Fardowsa spoke of the importance of the people on the Bardera side doing their part, in terms of telling their neighbors and friends about the services available at the West Bardera Maternity Unit. Supplements for pregnant women and women, help available to them until the birth process and so on. Just like the rest of the maternity homes in the region, this unit lacks some basic equipment such as ultrasound.
Staff at EBMCH
The medical team at East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital is six. There is a head nurse who is also Director of Maternal Hospital Bardera and Children's Hospital. [2] Other staff include additional nurses, midwives, midwife assistants, junior pharmacists, and pharmacist assistants.
Nurse Fardowsa serves as Assistant Chief Nurse at East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital. He has held this position since October 2007. Markabo Bilal Kulow, head midwife, has been serving the Bardera community for over 10 years as a midwife.
The staff at EBMCH are working hard on finding a solution to a deadly event in Somalia during each dry season: watery diarrhea or Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD). Communities across Somalia suffer from this annual event. East Bardera Hospital plans to build a permanent care center for the disease and other infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis and HIV AIDS.
The hospital currently gets a lot of medical supplies from the United States and Canada; Most of the drugs in larger Somali markets such as Mogadishu and Kismayo are often unreliable and sometimes harmful to consume.
Bardera Polytechnic College Training More Medical Staff
The newly established Bardera Poytechnic College focuses, among others, training more medical staff for local health centers. And Children's Hospital at East Bardera Mothers is among the first to receive new supplies from trained medical personnel. As the Bardera population increases, and more services are needed, it is important to have a place that trains additional staff.
The current staff of EBMCH have undergone medical training outside Bardera. EBMCH and Bardera Polytechnic have established working relationships. The Dean ( Hormuud ) of Bardera Polytechnic, Mohamed Abdudullahi Barre, is a friend and supporter of the Eastern Bardera Children and Children's Hospital. Mohamed is an old English teacher, working in various education centers in Bardera District. There are at least 20 new medical students for the first fill of students at Bardera Polytechnic. These students will fill in areas such as public health science, nursing and junior pharmacy, and these future leaders will have two years of training, respectively.
Community Education Against FGM And Other Health Information Sessions
The staff at Bardera Timur Hospital had initially taken up the task of going to the Bardera city neighborhood where they provided basic health education where people would benefit in the long term. One of the problems that has affected many young women and girls is female genital mutilation (FGM). Since the last twenty-five years or so, there has been slow but increasing attention given to this subject. Educated women and their families are aware of the health problems faced by women who have gone through this terrible procedure and they choose not to take their daughters to practitioners who do this mutilation.
Some of the problems resulting from FGM include childbirth issues, unusual infections, and many other complications. Nurses at EBMCH regularly hold sessions dealing with FGM in all community events. Environment level public health information sessions include:
- The need for every woman to maintain her health by visiting the clinic frequently and inquiring about certain treatments
- Get the right supplements and nutrients during and after pregnancy
- Take part in meetings of organizations that are oriented towards women's health
Nurses in East Bardera told women: Healthy women raise healthy children. These statements often result in other women and men who support female family members where they are provided with financial assistance and other forms such as family members receive medical advice given to mothers and young women when they bring the information back.
Pharmacy at East Bardera Maternity Hospital
From the beginning, it was proven that some of the diseases that pregnant women experience in Bardera can be prevented with safe supplements and with basic prenatal care. Supplies and medicines at East Bardera Hospital Maternity purchased in accordance with the needs of women and children. Since there is no large hospital serving in this community, more than 100,000 people, patients of all kinds, common people, patients with various diseases and men and women of all ages come to the East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital pharmacies to fill their prescriptions.
Prior to the establishment of EBMCH in 2006, every sick person in Bardera and surrounding areas would go to a private pharmacy for treatment. And most of the drugs available in Bardera are unreliable in large part due to the lack of security enforcement and the unknown origins of these drugs. East Bardera Hospital Pharmacy operates as a non-profit organization, therefore, the need to obtain and deliver unreliable drugs is impossible. It certainly proves to be remarkable for Bardera residents seeking medical care at East Bardera Maternity Hospital and its departments such as pregnant women, children's services and the pharmacy department.
Pharmacies are provided with drugs from Canada and the US. Most of these drugs are not prescribed in nature. EBMCH hospital pharmacy is managed with a junior pharmacist and his assistant. As you can see from the pharmacy shelves, there is not much stock here. But one of the great things at East Bardera Mothers and Children's Hospital is the quality of drugs. All of these medicines have been purchased from a safe market. In addition to supplements and painkillers, stomach worm medicines are some of the most effective drugs available at East Bardera Maternity Hospital. It is reported by patients and individuals worldwide as feedback to hospital services in general, and as anecdotal facts given to pharmacy staff by patients who previously received medication or hospital treatment.
Community participation in strengthening EBMCH
The EBMCH staff encourages visitors from North America and Europe to bring over-the-counter medicines and donate them to the EBMCH Pharmacy Department. They have asked for drugs that have a long shelf life because the non-AC room temperature is too high for many drugs and creates conditions for accelerated expiration for these drugs.
Future expansions for Bardera Maternity Hospital include construction for a new facility 1.2 km east of the Bardera Arc, which is planned to begin in October 2009 and acquire at least two ambulances. Both activities require the support of the community, in particular, friends of the hospital and anonymous donors and institutions.
