History

The Scholar House family started as Project Women in 1995 as a collaboration between six religious women's orders to address the needs of women and children in crisis in Louisville. Recognize the power of education to change lives and develop educational programs to help single mothers earn bachelor degrees. Project Women continued to serve a small number of women every year until 2005 when Cathe Dykstra, CEO of Family Scholar House and Chief Possibility Officer, joined the program. Dykstra increased program growth by extending outreach efforts to single parents and in 2008, the Women's Project changed its name to Family Scholar House. With the name change, Family Scholar House expanded its services to meet the needs of single parents and their children to ensure that the entire family succeeds in education. Since 2008, Family Scholar House has experienced a significant increase in the number of single parents seeking help. As of January 2015, 379 families with 572 children have utilized the Scholar House Family housing program. There are currently 939 families with 1,548 children on the pre-housing housing waiting list. To date, Family Scholar House participants have earned a total of 241 undergraduate degrees.

Campus

In collaboration with Marian Development Group, Family Scholar House has built four campuses throughout Louisville. The first campus opened in 2008 in partnership with the Louisville College of Education and Human Development. The Louisville Scholar House includes 56 apartments, Owsley Brown Frazier Academic Service Center, and Early Learning Campus, which offers early care and learning for children between the ages of 6 weeks and 4-years through the University of Louisville College of Education and Human Development.

In January 2011, the Scholar House Family opened the Downtown Scholar House which provides housing for 54 single parents and their children. This campus in downtown Louisville can be reached on foot from Spalding University and Jefferson Community & amp; Technical College, as well as bus routes to Louisville University. The historic Filson Club on campus has been renovated to function as an Academic Service Center. Downtown Scholar House is also home to Linda's Closet which opened in March 2015 and provides business and professional attire for Family Scholar House.

The third campus, Stoddard Johnston Scholar House, opened in January 2012. It is home to 57 single student parents and their families and is located on Bradley Avenue near the Eastern Parkway at the historic Johnston Elementary School Stoddard. The school building has recently been renovated into a house apartment and program space, allowing residents to have easy access to advisory and case management services.

Construction of the fourth Family Scholar House campus was completed in August 2013. Parkland Scholar House, located at the corner of Catalpa and Dumesnil Road, is the organization's first campus in west Louisville. After renovating and preserving the historic National Park School and adding two new buildings, the campus now provides homes for 48 families and program services for residents and non-residents in the community. The Family Cafe and Children's Nutrition Lab provide intergenerational family meals and activities for participants and other families, children, and senior citizens in the community.

Program

Family Scholar House caters to single, pre-occupancy, dwelling and post-program parents and their children with comprehensive care that fills them where they are and empowers them toward their educational, career, and family goals. All families have experienced poverty, unstable housing and, most often, domestic violence. Programs and services are responsive to family needs and are provided for all ages.

Housing

Family Scholar House participants who need stable housing can apply for a housing program, which includes housing on one of the four campuses of the Family Scholar Houses. In accordance with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines, participants are responsible for a portion of their rent based on 30% of their gross annual revenues and their own utilities. All housing participants receive assistance with budgets and household management.

Academic Support Service

Participants of the Scholar House Family are required to enroll full-time at an accredited college or university of their choice. The academic advice provided by Family Scholar House helps single parents enroll in college, get financial help to pay tuition and fees. Other services provided by Family Scholar House include advising students on their choice of classes, telling them about work programs and scholarship opportunities, obtaining school supplies, assisting with financial aid applications, and advocating for them in their respective schools. As a close participant of graduation, Family Scholar House helps participants with career services including resume writing, artificial interviews, and speed up networking events.

In addition to providing academic support to single-minded participants, Family Scholar House works with the children of the participants to completely break the cycle of inter-generational poverty. Parents who live at home receive help with children so that their children can learn and socialize in a safe environment. The Scholar House family also provides academic support services such as tutoring and school supplies for the youngest scholars. Until January 2015, 23 children from Family Scholar House participants pursue post-secondary education opportunities.

Family Support Services

The Scholar House family provides comprehensive case management to assist participants in obtaining needed support services and to overcome barriers to self-sufficiency. Participants meet regularly with family supporters for guidance, counseling, parenting, goal setting and coaching. The development of life skills completes formal education so that the family can achieve lifelong sufficiency. Family Advocates also provide assistance to meet basic needs by connecting participants to community resources and navigating benefits.

Family Support Services also provides a variety of programs for all ages to meet the needs and interests of different participants. These include children's programs, life skills workshops, peer support groups, financial education, nutrition and health activities, art therapy and home ownership programs.
