Plot

In the summer of 1972, in Madison, Pennsylvania, Vada Sultenfuss was an 11 year old girl and a hypochondriac. Harry Sultenfuss, Vada's father, is an awkward widower and funeral director who does not understand his daughter, so he always ignores it. Their home, which operates as a funeral home of the city, has guided her daughter to develop an obsession with death. Vada regularly takes care of his grandmother, 'Gramoo', who has Alzheimer's disease and whose wandering mind also affects Vada. His uncle Phil lived close by and often stopped by to help the family.

Vada hangs out with his best friend, Thomas J. Sennett, an unpopular child of his own age who is allergic to "everything". However, other girls except Judy teased the two, thinking they were more than just friends. Thomas J. often accompanied Vada when he visited the doctor, who assured him that he was not sick and he did not have a chicken bone in his throat.

Summer Vada starts well. She befriended Shelly DeVoto, the new makeup artist in her father's funeral room, who gave her guidance. He also developed a crush on his school teacher in fifth grade, Mr. Bixler, and hearing about the adult poetry writing class he taught. Vada stole money from a cookie jar in Shelly's trailer to cover the cost of the class. When advised to write about what is in his soul, Vada is afraid that he killed his mother, who died two days after giving birth.

When Harry and Shelly start dating, this affects Vada's attitude towards Shelly. One night, Vada follows Harry and Shelly to a bingo game and takes Thomas J. together to screw him up. On July 4, when Shelly's ex-husband Danny arrived, Vada wished she was there to take Shelly back, but to no avail. Vada becomes even more surprised when Harry and Shelly announce their engagement in the carnival, which makes her contemplate running away with Thomas J.

Vada began to see changes inside her. As she ran screaming that she was bleeding, Shelly politely explained to Vada that her first period was a completely natural process. When Vada realized this only happened to girls, she did not want to see Thomas J., who happened to be shortly thereafter. A few days later, Vada and Thomas J. sat under a tree by the river, where they shared an innocent first kiss.

Vada and Thomas J. found a honeycomb hanging on a tree, which Thomas J. decided to drop. Vada lost her mood ring in the process, so they started looking for it, but the search broke off as the bees began to swarm around, making them run. Thomas J. then went back on his own and found the ring. Unexpectedly, as he kicked the honeycomb before, the bees began to swarm over Thomas J. just as he found the ring. Unable to escape, he died of an allergic reaction.

Harry is left to deliver tragic news to Vada, which is so devastating that he will not leave his bedroom. When he attends Thomas J.'s funeral, his emotions become so strong that he runs away. Vada rushes to Mr. Bixler's house, wants to stay with her, and finds that she will marry someone else. He then ran to his favorite spot and Thomas J. near the tree to reflect on what had happened. When Vada came home, everyone was relieved, including Shelly, whom Vada began to accept as his future stepmother. His sorrow also managed to correct the rift between him and his father. Harry explains to Vada that his mother's death is not his fault and things like that can happen without explanation.

Towards the end of summer, Vada and her father see Mrs. Sennett, who is still struggling with the death of his son. She gave Vada mood rings back that Thomas J. had been found and Vada gave Mother Sennett a solace. On the last day of the writing class, Vada read a poem about losing her best friend before going to spend time with her new friend, Judy.
