Norma Bates (nÃƒÆ' Ã‚ Â© eÃƒ, Spool or Calhoun , also known simply as Mrs. Bates ) is a character fictitiously made by Robert Bloch in his 1959 novel Psycho . He is the deceased mother and serial killer killer Norman Bates, who has developed a killer personality based on him.

Although the characters are important for the story of Psycho, Norma only appears as a corpse in the films. He is not described as a living character until Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990), described by Olivia Hussey. Vera Farmiga then described Norma in the television series Bates Motel (2013-2017).

Norma Bates is a fictitious colleague to Augusta Gein, mother of Wisconsin killer Ed Gein.

The 1959 novel, a 1960 film adaptation and a 1990 movie prequel explains that after the death of her husband, Norma (whose girl's name was never revealed in the novel) raised her son Norman with cruelty: she forbade her to live away from him, and taught him that sexual intercourse was sins and that all women (except themselves) are prostitutes. This novel also shows that their relationship may be incest.

For years, Norma and Norman lived together in the small town of Fairvale, California "fictional" as if there was no one else in the world. "When Norman was a teenager, his mother met Joe Considine (Chet Rudolph at Psycho IV : The Beginning ) and plans to marry Considine convinces Norma to open a motel Norman grows jealously, believes that Norma has left him for his fiancÃ©e, and kills them with strychnine He then performs it like a suicide-killing, as if Norma had killed Considine and then himself.

Unable to bear the loss of his mother, Norman stole Norma's body and ground it in a fruit shed, and talked as if his mother were still alive. He also speaks in his own voice and often wears his clothes; in his own mind, he became his mother to avoid consciousness of his death and guilt for killing him. The "Mother" personality is equally possessive and cruel like Norma in life; "Mom" dominates and belittles him, forbids him to have friends, and kills any woman he is interested in. When Norman regains his consciousness, he finds the crime he believes his mother did, and destroyed his evidence.

One of the victims "Mother" is Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), who escaped to Motel Bates after stealing money from her employer. When he checked into the motel, Norman fell in love, and invited him to dinner with him in his office. This evoked the "Mother" anger, and he threatened to kill Marion if Norman allowed him into the house. He opposes her and eats dinner with Marion, who feels sorry for her and gently advises her to put her mother in a mental institution. She angrily rejected the suggestion, however, and insisted that her mother was sane. After Marion retires to his room, Norman becomes "Mom" and kills Marion in the bathroom. When Norman regained consciousness, he dumped Marion's body in a nearby marsh, covering what he believed to be his mother's crime.

Marion's employer hired a Milton Arbogast private investigator (Martin Balsam) to find him, and he went to the motel and asked him questions. Norman mentions that Marion has spoken with his mother, but he refuses to let Arbogast see it. Suspicious, Arbogast went to the house, where "Mother" killed her as well. Maria's sister Lila (Vera Miles), and boyfriend Sam Loomis (John Gavin), soon arrived, suspecting Norman of killing Marion for money. Lila found Mrs. Bates's body while looking for a house; Moments later, Norman attacked her as "Mother", only to be subdued by Sam. Norman was later arrested and instituted, and the "Mother" person took complete permanent control of his mind.

Psycho II

In the movie Psycho II (unrelated to Bloch novel of the same name), twenty-two years later, Norman Bates, who is now suspected of being healed, is released from the institution and returns home. He immediately received a note and a phone call from Mrs. allegedly. Bates. Norman takes a job at a local restaurant and befriends Emma Spool (Claudia Bryar), a cook, and a waitress named Mary Samuels (Meg Tilly). Norman offered Mary a room in his house, and he reluctantly accepted. At around this time, a series of mysterious murders were committed by a woman with a knife to people who came to the motel and home.

Norman's sanity began to unravel, as he began to believe that his mother committed murder. His psychiatrist, Dr. Bill Raymond (Robert Loggia), shows Mrs. Bates's body and reveals to him that Mary Samuels is actually Mary Loomis, daughter of Sam Loomis, and is planning with her mother, Lila, to drive her crazy again. to make him promise again for the murder of Marion; they both dressed up as Norman's mom and emerged through her bedroom window. Mary believes that the killer is hiding in Norman's house, and when Norman explains to Mary that the murderer may be her real mother, she speculates that she may have been adopted.

The killer finally kills Lila. When Mary and Norman returned home, Norman received a phone call from Dr. Raymond; in his mind, a phone call from his mother. Mary, disturbed, tried to convince Norman to stop answering the phone by dressing up as his mother, complete with a butcher knife. Mary accidentally killed Dr. Raymond, who came to the house to arrest Mary, and Norman tried to hide it from the police. Mary found Lila's body hidden in a pile of coal, and, sure Norman was the killer, tried to kill her. The police intervened just in time, and shot him dead.

That night, Ny. Spool visits Norman and reveals that he is his biological mother, and that Norma Bates is actually his aunt; Spool had been put into a mental institution soon after giving birth to Norman, and his sister, Norma, had adopted her and told her that she was her son. Spool later revealed that he had committed murder to protect Norman. He showered her to death with a shovel, and took the corpse to Mrs. Bates's room, where the "Mother" personality controlled her mind once again.

Psycho III

A few months later, a reporter named Tracy Venable (Roberta Maxwell) relates to the history of the Bates/Spool family; his research led him to a love triangle story between Norman's father, John, and Klan sister, Norma and Emma. Emma kills John in a jealous rage after Norma steals him, and kidnaps the young Norman, convincing him that he is the kid he has with John. Emma was arrested and instituted, and Norman was returned to her mother.

At this point in the series, Norman has begun killing another young woman under the control of Mother's personality. She finds some hope for redemption when she meets and falls in love with a young woman named Maureen Coyle (Diana Scarwid), but "Mom" eventually wins and kills her. Tracy finds Norman and tells him the truth about his offspring, and Norman destroys Mrs. Spool's body, trying to get away from the "Mother" control. He was arrested and sent back to the institution, but declared that he was finally free.

Psycho IV: Beginning

The fourth and final film in the series, the second and third film revelation retcons, supplied that Norman's father was stung to death by the bees, deleting all references to Emma Spool and retelling many of Norman and his past mother from the original film. It is implied in the film Mrs. Bates of schizophrenic and borderline personality disorder, which Norman inherited. Norman has been released from the institution and is now married. When Norman learned that his wife, Connie (Donna Mitchell), was pregnant, he decided to kill her to prevent another "curse" line from entering the world. He relented after his wife confessed his love, and decided to get rid of him from the past once and forever by burning his mother's house. During this act, he sees his mother's mocking and torturing eyes, but survives and destroys the house. At the end of the film, he is finally free of his mother's voice, which demands to be left out.
