Establishment

The Dublin Lie-Hospital was founded in 1745 by Bartholomew Mosse (1712-1759), a surgeon and a midwife-man who was shocked at the condition that pregnant women had to endure. Originally located at George's Lane at a recently closed theater location, the hospital moved to its present location in 1757, where it is known as "The New Lying-In Hospital", which today is called Rotunda, after architectural features. "Lying" is an ancient term for labor, referring to the old practice of labor after delivery, when a new mother lies in bed for days or weeks after childbirth, to rest and recuperate.

The records show that around 1781, "when the hospital is not perfectly ventilated, every sixth child dies within nine days after birth, seizure disease, and that after a thorough ventilation facility has been adopted, infant mortality, in the same, within the next five years, one in twenty ". This problem is not limited to the Lying-In Hospital. In that era, increased ventilation was a common problem in patient care, along with other sanitary and hygiene issues, and conditions in which surgeons such as Robert Liston in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, had to operate. Florence Nightingale is well known for working on safe and healthy hospital design.

Design

The main building design of the hospital was done by renowned architect Richard Cassels, who is also responsible for Leinster House, Russborough House and Powerscourt House, among others.

Because it is a charity, the hospital has several public function spaces where fundraising activities are held. One of these areas is a large rotunda, after which the hospital is now named, but which is now part of the Theater Gate.

The Rotunda, both as a maternity hospital and also a training center (affiliated with Trinity College, Dublin) is renowned for providing continuous services to mothers and babies from the start, making it the oldest continuing maternity hospital in the world. It is estimated that more than 300,000 babies have been born there. In 1889, the first caesarean section performed in Ireland was performed in Rotunda.
