Controversy

Catch-and-run case

On September 28, 2002, Khan was arrested for driving with a rash and negligent after his car ran to a bakery in Mumbai; one person sleeping on the sidewalk outside the bakery died and three others were injured in the accident. The alleged killing allegations were thrown at him, but later canceled. On July 24, 2013, he was officially accused of a punitive murder in this case, and he pleaded not guilty.

On May 6, 2015, Khan was found guilty of all charges in this case. The Bombay Session court concluded that Khan was driving the car under the influence of alcohol, causing one person's death and serious injury to four homeless people. Judge Session DW Deshpande was convicted of an actor for guilty murder not as big as murder and sentenced to five years in prison. Later on the same day, Khan, represented by Senior Advisor Amit Desai was granted bail by the Bombay High Court until May 8, 2015, in which the court adjourned his sentence until the last hearing in July. His driver Ashok Singh, who has testified that he himself was driving the car at the time of the accident, was charged with a false swear for having misled the Court with false testimony and been arrested. Kidnapping and finally the death of the main witness Constable Police Ravindra Patil remains a mystery, with some suspecting the involvement of organized crime. In December 2015, Khan was released from all charges of the case for lack of evidence. The Supreme Court on Tuesday July 5, 2016 recognized a plea by the Maharashtra government that challenged the release of Salman Khan in the case of hit-and-run by the Bombay High Court. The court refused to accelerate the case.

In 2005, a news outlet released what was said to be an illegal copy of a cell phone call recorded in 2001 by Mumbai police. Apparently it was a call in which he threatened Rai, in an attempt to force him to perform at social events organized by Mumbai crime figures. The displayed call offers connections to organized crime and disparaging comments about other actors. However, the alleged recordings were tested in a government forensic laboratory in Chandigarh, which concluded that it was a fake.
