Plot
Marshall stopped at Ted's apartment with a box of childhood memorabilia from his mother. Ted receives a call from an elderly woman who tells him that "the window is open", and heads to the ladies apartment a few blocks away. Later in MacLaren, Ted explains that "windows" is a window of opportunity to date a woman named Maggie (JoAnna Garcia), who follows up any long-term relationship with very short breaks, and then longer relationships.
Ted knew Maggie, "the best girl next door", since college, but he always quickly found a new boyfriend after being single. After several unsuccessful attempts, Ted begged Maggie's neighbor, Mrs. Douglas, to tell her when she's still single again. Ted arranges to meet him at the bar, and is determined not to screw up this time to make sure he comes in contact with several other men as much as possible, even ordering a taxi with a female driver. Robin reminds Ted that he still has to teach his nightclub, and he is forced to leave Maggie with Marshall and Lily.
While his class advised Ted to find love, Marshall snatched his childhood items in the bar. She found a letter for herself from 1993. The rat-tailed, 15-year-old over-wearing insisted that Future Marshall get expensive vehicles, a hot wife, and that she never "sells". Marshall sadly contemplated that his job at Goliath National Bank was an all-out sale. He leaves MacLaren, and Lily chases after him, leaving Maggie with Robin. Under Robin's supervision, a colleague of Maggie, named Jim, gets into the booth. Robin unabashedly teased Jim and intervened in his invitation to take Maggie to an art show, trying to annoy her. Robin sent Maggie to Barney, who had dared to wear Marshall's uniform. Ted races back to the bar, only to face Jim and Barney, who both want Maggie.
Lily heads to NAM, thinking Marshall will soon quit his job, but after further examination of the letter, he finds another thing young Marshall proud of: his ability to dip basketball. At the NAM basketball court, Marshall explained how sad he had never reached his dream, but Lily insisted that he had lived an extraordinary life. He tries to dip and hurt himself. Lily offers to make it for her and have sex in her office, unable to move her advise instead they have sex there in court.
Robin silently sends Maggie back to her apartment while the three men quarrel over who should get the first crack at Maggie. They race to the door of his apartment, and they find him reunited with his childhood neighbor Adam, "the man next door." Ted's future briefly recounted their long-standing love story, the second-biggest love story he had ever heard, and advanced for their happiness to marry. When Ted came out of the apartment building, he told Barney that he was ready to find true love again. Barney then slept with the old lady in Maggie's building to complete her overalls challenge.
Marshall returns to the bar to write a letter for himself 29 years further in the future. In the letter, he makes a small request for his future self to let him know if time travel exists. Lily returned to the booth with a plate full of hot wings, which she said someone "sent back" because it was too hot. Marshall finished the letter, telling Future Marshall that as long as he was with Lily, he would be fine. Apparently, an older version of Marshall was on the other side of the bar, who apologized to Wendy the Waitress for sending the wings back, saying he "already had some wings earlier... much earlier".
