Origin of the book
Author Heidi Murkoff cites his own search for information during his first pregnancy as a motivation to develop What to Expect When You Expect . Murkoff collaborated with his mother Arlene Eisenberg, a freelance journalist and sister Sandee Hathway, a nurse while developing a pregnancy guide.
Controversy
What to Expect When You Expect has been criticized for promoting paranoia and fear among pregnant women as it focuses on its very strict dietary complications and dietary guidelines. Murkoff also has no medical training and has been criticized further for stating he asked obstetricians to comment on the manuscript only at the end of the process of writing and editing. With the publication of the first book in 1984, one of the reasons it was perceived as problematic was because of many old and unrevised prints in the public circulation. Although words are revised with each new edition to respond to criticism, older copies are inherited by women to their peers.
