Histori

The Berkeley Food and Housing Project is currently evolving from a small group of local churches providing emergency food services to temporary young men who flooded the area during the Summer of Love in 1969. Initially, the First Baptist Church of Berkeley was under the leadership of Dr. Raymond P Jennings began offering a meal service based in their basement. University Lutheran Chapels and other local churches soon formed a partnership with First Baptist. In 1972, the food department was named Emergency Lifeline Berkeley. In 1984, the program consisted of several shelters operating from the Berkeley churches. In 1986, the programs were consolidated into a secular and integrated organization called Berkeley Emergency Food Project. The city of Berkeley arranges to transform the basement of the downtown Veterans Building into a Men's Overnight Shelter. In 1991, a women's shelter was set up in a building in Dwight Way, and in 1996 the Multi-Service Center was opened on the ground floor of the Trinity United Methodist Church. The fourth location, called Russell Street Residence, opened in 2002 as a California board and care facility serving 17 men and women who used to be homeless and diagnosed with mental disabilities.

Services

Most case management services are based outside the Multi-Service Center. Case managers help individuals with housing searches and provide emergency assistance. The Center also works with EveryOne Home (Alameda County) to distribute funds from the federal Government Supported Self-Help Program and the Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP). In addition, the 41-year Quarter Meal service is based outside the Multi-Service Center. The food, which is usually worth a quarter and is now served free, feeds 100 homeless and low-income individuals daily.

In 2010 the Berkeley Food and Housing Project served 18,615 meals at Russell Street Residence, 37,880 at Men's Overnight Shelter and Veterans Program, and 36,135 meals at North County Women's Center. In addition, 11,000 free community meals are served at the Women's Center and 36,000 meals are provided at the Multi Service Center.

The Men's Overnight Shelter can accommodate up to 50 people per night, while Women's Housing Spots provide 32 beds for women and children.

The Women's Resources Center provides food services, financial planning assistance, work counseling, and access to healthcare providers. In addition, the upper floors contain an Independent and Transitional House program, which provides living facilities for women and families who move to permanent housing.
