A cowlick is part of the hair that stands erect or lies at an angle contrary to the style in which the rest of a person's hair is worn. Cowlicks arise when the direction of hair growth forms (against) the spiral pattern. The term "cowlick" comes from the domestic cattle habit of licking his children, which produces a circling pattern in the hair. The most common sites of human cowlick are in the crown, but they can appear anywhere. They also sometimes appear in the front and back of the head.
The term "cowlick" comes from the end of the 16th century, when Richard Haydocke used it in his translation of Lomazzo: "The lockes or feather feely haire called cow-lickes, are made spinning upward."

Characteristics
The hair on the back of the head usually grows in a circular pattern that is flattened from a central point; this can also occur in facial hair in men. The definition of whorl is hair that rotates along the axis. The point where we find the hair circle is where the hair changes direction. At the top of the head hair grows forward, at the back of the head grows toward the nape and hair grows to the left and right of the head on the side of the head. The hair circle can be in the center of the head but can also be located on the left or right side of the head. In the center of the scalp it will be seen because the hair stretched flat.
People with cowlicks tend to have at least two hair circles with one being dominant and visible while others are less clear. In the center of the circle of hair, you can see the prominent hairs from the scalp. When combed against the grain of hair, the hair in the middle of the cowlick will stand upright. When left too long, the cowlick will create a flat place, when left too short it will stand up.
Cowlicks are clearer in straight and thick hair. In people with straight and coarse hair, the scalp will be visible in the middle of the circle as light penetrates into the scalp. Both men and women have cowlicks, which can be covered by longer hair so the circle is not visible.
One theory is that a fart comes from a circular arrangement of collagen fibers in the cranial fascia of the cowlick area. This setting is different from the normal and straight pattern.

Management
Many people find it irritating because it often goes against the desired hairstyle. There are several ways to tame a naughty cowlick. For most people, a combination of the right hairstyle, length, product used, and styling techniques can overcome the appearance. For people who care more about cowlick management, more drastic action can be used. Electrology, waxing, and even cosmetic surgery can be used to further permanently repair cowlick. However, many people also use their cowlicks to their advantage, especially for those who have cowlicks in the hairline that can simplify the pompadour style.
