The Eternal Word Television Network , better known for its EWTN initialism, is an American television network that presents Catholic-themed programming all the time. Founded by Mother Angelica, PCPA, in 1980 and began broadcasting on August 15, 1981, from a garage studio at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Irondale, Alabama, founded by Mother Angelica in 1962. He hosts his own show, Mother Angelica Live, until suffering major strokes and other health problems in September 2001. Repeats are now on air as the Best of Mother Angelica Live or Mother Angelica Live Classics From that time until his death on Easter Sunday 2016, he lived a closed life in the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama.

The network, through diocesan television channels in other Catholic countries, advertises itself as EWTN: The Global Catholic Network. Regular programs include daily mass and Tridentin Mass format, traditional Stations of the Cross, recorded daily recording of Rosary, and news, discussions and daily and weekly Catechism programs for both adults and children. Christmas and Easter programs; Mass of bishops and cardinal installations; coverage of World Youth Day; and papal visits, deaths, funerals, conclave, and elections are also presented. EWTN also has satellite presence and shortwave radio. Spanish broadcasts are available on all platforms. On December 8, 2009, EWTN began airing in high definition.

The current chairman of the board of directors and CEO is Michael P. Warsaw. Although the network has a trustee, it has no shareholder or owner. Most network funding comes from advertised audience donations of 100% supported viewers , which makes it from secular or non-Catholic programming ads. His traditional request for donations is "Keep us between your gas and electricity bills".

EWTN also contributed to the publication of the National Catholic Register newspaper, obtained in January 2011, and for a report from the Catholic News Office, which is also owned. This network maintains an online presence through its main website, EWTN.com, and also has a dedicated commercial site, EWTNReligiousCatalogue.com.

In 2017, Michael P. Warsaw, who is a consultant to the Vatican Secretariat for Communications, leads the EWTN.

Development

Angelica's mother made her vows in 1953. In 1962, she founded the abbey of Our Lady of the Angels. During the 1970s, he was a lecturer of demand and produced pamphlets and audio and video tapes. He was a guest at local WBMG stations (currently WIAT, Channel 42), and at events on the Christian Broadcasting Network and Trinity Broadcasting Network. After he gave an interview at the WCFC station (Channel 38) in Chicago, he decided he wanted to have his own network. "I went in, and it was just a small studio, and I remember standing in the doorway and thinking, 'It does not take much to reach the masses.'I just stood there and said to God,' God, I must have this one '".

Angelica's mother bought a satellite room and EWTN began airing on August 15, 1981, with four hours of daily programming, including her own show, Mother Angelica Live, Sunday mass, and reruns of programs Older Catholics like Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Living Lifestyle . The rest of the time is filled with performances produced by dioceses throughout the country, pointing out from the Protestant sources that Mother Angelica set along with Catholic teaching, and children's events such as Joy Junction and > The Sunshine Factory . About a third of the time the programming consists of secular content, such as reruns of the Bill Cosby Show, public domain film, and western-themed cooking and shows. EWTN eventually increased its broadcast schedule to six hours per day and then to eight hours per day in 1986. The secular content gradually decreased from 1986 to 1988, and the satellite distribution was expanded by the end of 1987, after which EWTN acquired much more desirable satellite channels. and start broadcasting all the time. At this point, EWTN began broadcasting the daily rosary prayer and adding a number of educational performances. In-house original programming production is gradually increasing. Mass became broadcasted daily in 1991 from a chapel in the courtyard of the monastery. Most of the performances from non-Catholic sources are eliminated and a more theologically developed image gradually.

It also generates The World Over Live , which reports current relevant events. Journalist and writer Raymond Arroyo, who is the EWTN news director, hosted the program. The program is conservative in its political orientation and is generally conservative in its religious orientation. Programming history

In its early history, EWTN broadcasts Catholic programs from various Catholic sources, ranging from Catholic charismatic programs, such as the work of the Pastor. Michael Manning, for programs focusing on social reform and social justice, such as Christopher Closeup , for doctrinal programs guided by pastors.

In the early 1990s, EWTN began to produce more of its own programs. This effort marks a conservative change that is striking in the overall orientation, with programs on the topic of social reform and justice being gradually phased out and replaced by doctrinal programs and dialogue programs. The shift was evident in daily broadcasts, which in 1992, began incorporating Latin into the liturgy and gradually erasing contemporary music. Some unsaved Mass is really in English and some include more contemporary music. On Christmas Eve 1993, Mother Angelica and the nuns returned her order to traditional customs. From 1992, the Latin section of the Mass included Gloria, the introduction of the Gospel reading, Sanctus, and the remainder of the Mass after the Great Amine, beginning with the Lord's Prayer.

Among his famous weekly programs are The Life and the Life. The Journey Home , hosted by Marcus Grodi, presents converts to the Catholic Faith. Grodi himself was a former Presbyterian minister who turned to the Catholic Faith in 1992. Although most guests are former Protestants, former non-Christian religious members, such as Judaism), and former atheists sometimes appear. Life on the Rock is guided by Rev. Mark Mary, MFVA and Doug Barry.

The first HD feed is available to Comcast subscribers in Richmond, Virginia and beyond on May 11, 2010.

In October 2011, EWTN became available through Roku streaming player. The player provides six direct EWTN channels at no cost, including English, Spanish and German, allowing users to view channels on their television. In addition, select the EWTN program can be viewed through the video on demand option, and direct feed from EWTN Radio is available.

Often EWTN airs a special program: special holiday programs; coverage of the death of the Great Pope; Papal conclaves, elections, inauguration, and visits; Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Easter Mass; the installation of bishops, archbishops, and cardinals; and World Youth Day.

Criticism

In a 1993 episode of Mother Angelica Live, Angelica's mother harshly criticized the re-rebellion imitated from the Stations of the Cross on World Youth Day in Denver, Colorado, attended by Pope John Paul II. Angelica's mother is angry that a woman is playing Jesus. Archbishop Rembert Weakland of the Milwaukee Archdiocese criticized Mrs. Angelica's comments as "one of the most embarrassing, non-Christian, offensive, and divisive criticisms I have ever heard". Angelica's mother replied, "She does not think a woman who plays Jesus is offensive? She can put her head in the backroom as far as I know!"

In 1997, Ms. Angelica publicly criticized Cardinal Roger Mahony, then Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, for her pastoral letter on the Eucharist, "Gathering Faithfully Together: A Guide to the Sunday Mass", which she deems lacking emphasis on transubstantiation: "I am afraid my obedience in the diocese will be absolutely zero, and I hope the other people in the diocese will be zero â € "Cardinal Mahony considers his comments as allegations of heresy Angelica then conditionally apologizes for her comments.

In 1999, Bishop David E. Foley of the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama issued a decree prohibiting priests in his diocese to celebrate Massa ad orientem (which literally shows "to the east", but in this case means with the priest and the congregation faces the church apsis in such a way that the congregation faces the same direction as the priest) in most circumstances. Although the ruling does not specifically mention the EWTN, supporters and critics generally agree that the decision, which applies to "... any Mass that will be or broadcast on television for broadcast or recorded for public dissemination", is specifically written to target EWTN. Bishop Foley stated that the practice of priests facing away from the hearing "makes political statements and divides people."

Papal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Awards

In 2000, Archbishop Roberto GonzÃÆ'¡lez Nieves of San Juan, Puerto Rico made an EWTN apostolic visit. Nieves decided that he had three different problems: real ownership, the right of a convent to donate property to the EWTN, and, because he was never elected, the authority of Mrs. Angelica. Subsequently the problem was solved when, in 2009, the Holy See directly awarded Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice to Ms. Angelica and the EWTN leaders to thank them for their service to the Church.

Branding

The EWTN logo has incorporated the globe in some form since its network launch in 1981.

In 1995, the logo was changed to "EWTN International Catholic Network" which later became "EWTN Global Catholic Network" in 1996.

In 1996, the ident was slightly redesigned with gold with a background of 4 colors of gold, white, purple, and green. The main identity of 2001 was updated with the capital letters "EWTN" in gold. The world was also changed to provide a more mature look.

Images of stained glass windows, taken from the Temple of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama, have been used with the EWTN 2001 identity.

In the original version of the 2001 logo, there was a spinning world ball, inside which there was a shining monument. Some of the surrounding panels have video clips of the rosary, saints, Pope John Paul II, Franciscan monks, Temple of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and the late Mother Angelica. The camera zoomed into a shining monstrance, and then another globe in the parabola and a dome is displayed. The abbreviation "EWTN" in uppercase rotates and then the world turns to gold when the previous logo is enlarged and then reconstituted. Once again "EWTN" spins and straightened with a golden ball. A magnificent fanfare began with a chorus singing "Pange Lingua Gloriosi" accompanying all this.

The 2005 version of the logo differs from the original version with different video clips, including from Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Holy Sacraments Sacred Venue, the late Mother Angelica, the saint, and the rosary, and then the rest of the logo with shining montrans is displayed, followed by another globe in a parabola and dome. "EWTN" spins and then the globe turns to gold when the previous logo is enlarged and then reconstituted. Once again, "EWTN" spins and straightens itself with a golden ball.

In 1991, EWTN celebrated its tenth anniversary with a new slogan "Turn to Us" along with the classic logos, gold boxes, and magnificent orchestration.

The new logo was introduced at the end of the Fall 2015 and then made the logo in 2016.

Some video backgrounds have used the current EWTN identity with the slogan "Direct Truth, Catholic Life."
