Plot
Six months after the events of the first film, following the events of the short film Rings , the cursed Samara Morgan videotape has been circulating among teenagers in Astoria, Oregon. Jake Pierce in his seventh day according to the recording rules, and asked his friend Emily to watch the tape. She briefly stepped into the kitchen while Emily was supposed to watch the tape. Jake receives a phone call and initially thinks it's Samara but is relieved to realize that it's just his friend with whom he plans to trick Emily to watch the tape. Suddenly, Jake saw a dark liquid flowing from under the kitchen door and walked out into the living room, only to find Emily closing her eyes while watching the tape. Jake is then killed immediately by Samara.
Rachel Keller and her son, Aidan, have moved to Astoria from Seattle after sending the tape to ether. Rachel works at The Daily Astorian for editor Max Rourke. Rachel finds out Jake's death, checks his body, only for Samara to show up, stating that he has been looking for her. Rachel got the tape and burned it. Aidan had a nightmare when Samara dragged him onto the television. She immediately began developing hypothermia and bruises on her arms. At the fair, Aidan wanders to the loo and takes a photo of his reflection, where Samara appears. Rachel took him home but they were attacked by wild deer on the way. Rachel realizes that Aidan may be owned by Samara.
Max took them inside. While Rachel tries to give Aidan a bath, she develops an irrational fear of water. Samara causes the water to recede from the tub, replacing Aidan with herself, and terrorizing Rachel so she tries to drown Samara. Max enters, sees him drown Aidan, and forces him to bring his son to the hospital. Based on Aidan's bruises, Emma Temple's psychiatrist suspected child abuse on Rachel's side, who admitted she had postpartum depression, and she sent Rachel away. Searching for answers, Rachel returns to Morgan farm on Moesko Island, finding evidence of biological mother Samara Evelyn, who tries to drown her as a baby. Rachel visits Evelyn in a mental hospital, who advises her to "listen to her baby".
At the hospital, Samara controls Aidan's body and telepathically forces Dr. Temple to commit suicide before returning home Max. Max arrives, suspects a dirty game, and tries to secretly take Aidan's photo. Rachel arrives, finding a loving Aidan waiting for her, but acts suspiciously out of character. He stepped outside, found the body of Max in his pickup truck. Rachel falls asleep, dreaming of Aidan, who tells him that she should throw Samara out. Upon waking, Rachel uses Samara's medicine with sleeping pills and places her in the tub to drown out Aidan to get rid of her. Samara was removed but appeared on television. Rachel let herself be dragged into Samara's monochromatic world.
Finding himself at the bottom of Samara's well to die, Rachel finds the lid partly open. He scales the well wall, chased by Samara, but escapes by climbing out and pushing the lid on Samara, locking him out of his life and Aidan.
Wandering in the jungle, he came to the cliff where Samara's adopted mother, Anna, committed suicide. Hearing Aidan's voice, Rachel falls off the cliff and falls into the water, returning to the real world and reuniting with Aidan.

In the release of the DVD Edition Without Stars, some additional scenes were included that were not in the theatrical release. This scene includes conversations with Rachel's new neighbors (and neighborhood gossip), a number of extras where Max shows romantic interest in Rachel, more scenes with Samara before owning Aidan (including one where she is shown to put her to the restroom at a local exhibit), and the short film Rings (2005) (which is also included in the special edition The Ring which was released just before The Ring Two arrived at the cinema). A scene in a play piece where Aidan first meets a deer while wandering to the local market (before a deer's attack) has also been removed from this version. Also, some musical cues change like when Samara jumps out of the well in the opening scene. The opening scene is also longer.
