Plot

When her husband George disappeared after a flight into the wilderness of northern British Columbia's hinterland for gold, Andrea Spalding contacted Jean Dupre for help, who was available for hire after intimidating sour passengers with aerobatics at Molyco Company Cessna 206, then landed and walked away from the plane as continues toward an active runway onto the Cessna 185 landing road, with Molyco executives still on board.

Together, Dupre and Spalding begin a search in the dilapidated Havchand Canada DHC-2 Beaver. Along the way, they recover from mechanical damage and meet the native fisherman Elijah, who earnestly encourages them to move away from the "Headwater".

Upon arriving at Headwater, Dupre accidentally crashed the plane during the water landing, but he and Spalding survived, shaken but not injured. From there, the couple becomes involved in suspicious activities with Silas McGee, a prospect seeker and a hermit who wants to protect his silver mine. Facing his brother, Ian McGee, their search turned into a ravishing mystery/adventure, involving wrong identity, greed and murder. When Dupre found the Mollyco plane where George Spalding was last seen, submerged in the lake, the seekers finally learned the truth about the disappearance of Spalding.

Production

Mother Lode involves Charlton Heston family members. As he directed and starred, his son, Fraser Clarke Heston, came up with the idea, writing the script and acting as a producer, while his wife, Lydia, was credited as a photographer. "The family company, Agamemnon Films, produced the film, and along with some long-lost titles, has been licensed for distribution through Warner Home Video." Featurette that accompanies the DVD release reveals: "... Fraser Heston is deeply influenced by the work of John Huston of Treasures of the Sierra Madre (1948) although structurally the film is like the Canuck version of Peter Benchley's Deep: the young adventurer becomes obsessed with treasures: an exciting boyfriend wants to pack and go home, eccentric but experienced treasure hunters manipulate both. "

The shoot for Mother Lode was done mainly in the Lovely Water Lake near Squamish, British Columbia, with most of the air scenes filmed along the Fraser River Basin. Additional photography takes place near Vancouver, British Columbia.

Aircraft used

The floatplane de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver used in Mother Lode is not meant to fall, nor is the accident part of the original storyline. Trying a "glass water landing", the pilot reduces its landing too late when the left buoy is contacted, creates a drag and hook, followed by the right float doing the same thing, where all control is lost and the airplane spins, reverses, and sinks. Without the remaining fiscal options, Hestons are forced to enter the crash into the plot. This scene is considered by many fans as the top of the film.

The Beaver floatplane has been recovered from the lake and transported to Kelowna, British Columbia, where it is fully restored, returned to the wheels and sold to American businesses, which are licensed aircraft as N323RS.

The aircraft that landed when Mollyco Cessna 206 wandered into the runway was Cessna 185, which did a sudden "firewall" (full power application) and pull-ups to clean 206. Both Cessna 206 or 185 are usually rated for air maneuvers as depicted in the film.

Reception

Mother Lode was not well received by critics. Reviews on the TV Guide consider this movie as "mediocre".

Variety is more positive: "As the title suggests, the consumption problem in Mother Lode is a golden search. His pictures are not without shortcomings, but long in good performance, charismatic people in three main principles.such role, an interesting outdoor air sequence in the Cassiar Mountains of British Columbia and high levels of tension throughout. "

Mother Lode has a very limited cinematic release in the United States, and a limited VHS release shortly thereafter, with the DVD release on March 29, 2011. The movie has not been released in Blu-ray format. In the DVD version review, Stuart Galbraith IV of DVD Talk thought it worked best as a thriller and "sometimes very effective".
