Vestal Goodman (December 13, 1929 - December 27, 2003) was a singer who appeared in the Southern Gospel genre for over half a century. She is well known as a soloist and as a member of The Happy Goodman Family - originally from her husband and her siblings - one of the pioneering groups in southern gospel music.

Goodman is the fourth of six children, and he started singing at church since childhood. Raised inside the Lord's Pentecostal Church, his initial intention was to study for Metropolitan Opera, but grew up in church he felt compelled to sing gospel music.

He married Howard Goodman, a preacher nine years older than him, on November 7, 1949. They had a son Rick, and a daughter Vicki. They shepherded the church and sang for the congregation all over the country. Together with Howard's two brothers, Sam and Rusty, they are known as The Happy Goodman Family, helped pave the way for Southern gospel music during the 1960s.

With the establishment of Word Records in the early 1960s, Vestal and The Happy Goodman Family were the mainstay artists signed by the company. In 1969, he won the first Vocalist of the Year Dove Award. As a natural step in his career, Vestal Goodman released his first solo album, "Hallelujah!" in 1971, from which came the famous singles, "It'll All Be Over But the Shoutin '".

His autobiography, Vestal! 'God, I will not take' for my trip now ', published in 1999. It details his life in Southern gospel music, his heart problems, his subsequent battle with cancer and his struggle with addiction to prescription drugs. The Happy Goodmans won several Grammy and Dove awards, charting 15 number 1 hit songs including "I Will not Take Nothin 'For My Journey Now," and performed over 3,500 concerts, including appearing in the White House for President Jimmy Carter in 1979.

Goodman is honored with the name "South Gospel Music Queen", proclaimed in various magazines, from Rolling Stone, Billboard Magazine, Time, > People , and The Singing News. She is also known for her distinctive handkerchief, which she holds in her hand for almost every show, sometimes waving her head. Comedian/singer Mark Lowry used to joke, "The anointing is in a handkerchief," during their Gaither Homecoming concert performance.

He and Howard worked with many famous musicians on Gaither Homecoming's music projects in the 1990s. He was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Association (GMA) Hall of Fame in 2004. The Happy Goodmans group was inducted into the GMA Hall of Fame in 1998.

Howard Goodman died on November 30, 2002, after the couple made a farewell recording and sang a tour dubbed "The Final Stand."

Vestal Goodman died at the age of 74 complications from influenza during the Christmas holidays in Florida with his family. He died in an ambulance on his way to a hospital in Celebration, Florida. His son, Rick, said it was appropriate for his death that it would happen in a place called Celebration.

Worthington Music Group and Goodman Family Ministries partnered to release a record collection from the family archive Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 1 in 2008. The critically acclaimed album gives the glimpse glimpse into the ministries of Howard and Vestal Goodman.
