The Horatio Algeria Association of Distinguished Americans is a non-profit organization based in Alexandria, Virginia, founded in 1947 to honor America's remarkable achievements that have succeeded in spite of adversity and to emphasize the importance of higher education. The association is named for Horatio Alger, a 19th-century writer of hundreds of tenth novels in the genre "rags-to-riches", praising the importance of diligence and hard work.
This association gives the annual Horatio Alger Award to the copy of his ideals. It also provides scholarships, and describes itself as the largest demand-based scholarship provider in the United States. All scholarships are funded by the generosity of the members of the Horatio Alger Association.

Scholarship program
The Horatio Alger Association has one of the most privately-funded private university funding programs, funded by private parties in the United States. Scholarships offered include National Scholarships, State Scholarships and Dennis R. Washington Achievement Scholarships.
National Bachelor
The National Scholars program was created in 1984 to help senior high school seniors who have overcome difficulties for college. Over time, the Horatio Alger Association has expanded its program. Each year, the association provides over 100 National scholarships to students from every US and Puerto Rican state. The grants received by the National Scholars are valued at $ 22,000 each. The recipient is also given a trip all fee-paid to Washington, D.C. where they met associate members, attended the Horatio Alger Awards Ceremony, and learned about the federal government and the American free enterprise system. Since its founding in 1984, the program has awarded more than $ 125 million in college scholarships.
In 2010, the association awarded $ 20,000 scholarships to 104 high school students. Also, thanks to Force10 Networks, in recent years each recipient is given a wireless-capable computer for use in college.
Country Scholarship
The Association also operates a State Scholars program that provides scholarships to students in every state. The prize amounts range from $ 2,500 and $ 10,500.

The alumni scholarship recipient is entitled to receive Dennis R. Washington Achievement Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to alumni seeking graduates and doctoral degrees. The program is funded by a $ 10 million grant from members of Horatio Alger Dennis R. Washington, and his wife, Phyllis.

Horatio Alger Awards
This association annually awards Horatio Alger Awards to outstanding Americans who provide examples of dedication, purpose, and perseverance in their personal and professional lives. Recipients often achieve success in the face of adversity. Each award recipient becomes a lifelong member of the association.
The annual awards series was inaugurated in 1947 by Kenneth Beebe of the American Schools and Colleges Association. In 1946, he awarded his achievements to two New York City businessmen. In 1947, he changed the name of the award to Horatio Alger and made four awards for entrepreneurs. Recipients in subsequent years have included business and government leaders, athletes, entertainers, innovators, entrepreneurs, physicians, teachers, artists, and writers who have overcome difficulties and achieved great success. Currently, about ten American scholarship recipients are announced each year. In addition, every year since 2003, the International Horatio Alger Award has been awarded to citizens of other countries who serve as role models and embody the ideals promoted by the association.
