Plot
Drew Baylor is a designer for shoe companies. When his latest design, regarded as a major achievement in his life, had a flaw that would cost the company $ 972 million to fix, Drew was humiliated by his superiors before he was dismissed. Disappointed by his failure, and his breakup with his girlfriend, Ellen, he plans to commit suicide, only to be stopped at the last moment by a call from his sister Heather who tells him that his father died while visiting family in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. When his mother Hollie refused to leave, following a dispute between him and the rest of Kentucky Baylors, Drew volunteered to take the body.
On a flight to Kentucky, Drew meets Claire, an upbeat and upbeat stewardess who gives her a first-class seat, because the plane is empty. He is proven to help the sad Drew, giving him directions and tips to get to his destination before they part. When he arrived at Elizabethtown, Drew was welcomed by the family, and he made arrangements for the cremation at the request of his mother, despite objections from the family. While staying at a hotel, where a wedding reception was held, Drew called his mother and sister, then his ex-girlfriend as he continued to struggle with his thoughts to commit suicide. Finally, he called Claire, and they both talked for hours. He impulsively suggested that they meet before he had to leave for a flight to Hawaii.
Drew came to overcome his father's death, and when he visited his aunt, Dora, his uncle, Bill, commented on how his father would see the suit. Drew realizes that he did not give the suit to the mortuary for cremation, and has second thoughts on the procedure. He rushes out to stop the cremation but is too late and given his father's ashes. Claire got back from her flight and suddenly met her at her hotel. They sleep together, but when she tells him that she loves him, she answers with regret that she has failed in her life, admitting she thought of committing suicide. Claire goes mad because Drew does not respond well.
Hollie and Heather arrived for the service, and Hollie recounted a series of funny anecdotes with his speeches. Claire arrives, and tells Drew to make one last trip with her father, giving her a map with special stops to make along the way. Drew follows the map to the house, spreading his father's ashes in an unforgettable location until it reaches the farmer's market, where a series of notes gives him a choice; either follow the home map, or follow a new direction. He chose the latter, in which Claire was waiting for him. Both kisses and Drew finally realize that he loves her.

Adjustable settings for shooting scenes in Louisville, Kentucky include Brown Hotel, Highland Middle School, and Cave Hill Cemetery. Opening the scene shows a helicopter flying over downtown Portland, Oregon and the Fremont bridge. Although Brown Hotel's exterior, lobby and corridor are visible, a passable replica of the Crystal Brown Hotel Ball Room is reinvented on the sound stage. While Bloom's character is supposedly traveling to "Elizabethtown" by car, he will be misguided on the street. He is also depicted through a Cherokee Park tunnel, which happens to be on I-64. Elizabethtown is on I-65, about 60 miles in the other direction.
Although the title of the film is Elizabethtown , most of the small town scene is actually filmed in Versailles, Kentucky. Only two scenes depicting typical landmarks were filmed in Elizabethtown itself, as many of Elizabethtown's historic buildings have been replaced by chain stores and sprawled. Some scenes were filmed in LaGrange, Kentucky. Other local scenes were filmed at Otter Creek Park in Meade County, near Brandenburg. Filming also took place in Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Memphis, Tennessee; and Oklahoma City.
In the original piece of the film shown at the Toronto International Film Festival, an epilogue revealed that the shoes designed by Drew turned out to be a hit, as it whistled with every step. It's cut from the release version of the movie to prevent the end that looks too drawn out.
