Plot
A young man with an artistic talent who lived in the united British coal mining town in the early 20th century found himself stunted by his emotionally manipulative and dominating mother - the psychological and symbolic interpretation of the Oedipus story.
Gertrude Morel, miserable in her marriage, put her hopes on her son, Paul. In an attempt to manipulate Paul's life, he jealously seeks to prevent Paul from having any relationship with any woman. However, Paul went into town for work and became fascinated with his actualized and "liberated" feminist colleagues, Mrs. Clara Dawes, who is married. Paul and Clara become sexually involved and Clara realizes that Paul's emotional attachment, like herself, lies with others - in the case of Paul, his mother.
Gertrude learns about Paul's involvement with Clara, and he slips into a grim depression and physical illness. Paul fled to his mother, to take care of him and sit beside him. After the death of his mother, Paul meets his young lover, Miriam, and tells him that because of codependency with his mother he intends to live the rest of his life without any serious relationship with another woman - essentially fulfilling his mother's and objective wishes.

Reception
Bosley Crowther of The New York Times wrote: " Sons and Lovers is sensitively felt and photographed in the movie version of Jerry Wald (Lawrence's novel).... Jack Cardiff, the camera turned into a director, has filled it with pictorial poetry... The deterioration of the north-British coal town, the warmth of a poor coal miner's house, the gloom of the cold English country near Eastwood, where Lawrence was born - all caught and concentrated in this film, exactly the black-and-white, which put Lawrence's general story in a stunning picture style.... (T) The most dynamic and emotional character in the film is the discard of his conqueror's father, played brilliantly by Trevor Howard. His frequent assault on rebellion, - his sad affection of disappointment and his indications of always being unwanted and alone may be the most obvious articulation of the theme of frustration at fairy tale. Through her most intense expressed t he realizes the death of young love. "
