Fashion in the 1970s is about individuality. In the early 1970s, Vogue stated "There are no rules in the current fashion game" because overproduction flooded the market in cheap synthetic clothing. Common items include mini skirts, bells popularized by hippies, vintage clothing from the 1950s and earlier, and glam rock androgynous and disco styles that introduce platform shoes, bright colors, glitter, and satin.

New technology brings advances in production through mass production, higher efficiency, higher standards and uniformity. Generally the most famous silhouette of the mid and late 1970s for both sexes is a tight one at the top and loose at the bottom. The 1970s also saw the birth of a casual, non-conformist casual fashion approach, which consisted of sweaters, T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. The French designer Yves Saint Laurent and the American designer Halston both observed and embraced the changes taking place in society, especially the growth of women's rights and counter-cultural youth. They managed to adapt their design aesthetics to accommodate market-directed changes.

Throughout this decade, women and teenage girls have long hair, with the center or sides, which are the styles brought from the late 1960s. Other hairstyles from the beginning to the mid-1970s included bumpy "gypsy" pieces, layered fabrics, and "cross-eyed" styles, popularly referred to as "wings," in which the hair was shaped to resemble small wings in temples. This display is popularized by the stars of the television series Charlie's Angels. Blond-lined or "blur" hair is also popular. In 1977, punk singer Debbie Harry of Blondie sparked a new trend with blond-shoulder-length platinum blond hair worn with long borders (bangs).

In the 1970s, making one of the popular hairstyles for women did not take much time. These hairstyles, including Afro hairstyles, Shaggy Hairdo and Feathered hair (known as "Farrah Fawcett hairstyle") are perfect when you're on the go and will keep your expressive style in check. For Blacks in the United States and elsewhere, afro is worn by both sexes throughout the decade. Sometimes it is done by white people, especially American Jews as an alternative to long uniform long hair that is the mainstay of fashion until the arrival of punk and "disco look" when hair becomes shorter and the center is no longer a fashion.

The most iconic female hairstyle of the 1970s was Farrah Fawcett's hairstyle. Popularized in 1976, the hairstyle was greatly imitated by many American women and girls. It combines waves, curls, and layers. Most styles are worn with bangs, but can also be worn with the side. To make it more stylish, women and girls will wet their hair with blond streaks.

Male hairstyle

Continuing from the 1960s, ducktail hairstyles and Pompadour (later known as "Elvis Presley hairstyles") are popular among young American Americans and Mexican-Americans in big cities like New York. Oil or brylcreem in large quantities is usually used to keep hair in place. The early and mid-1970s generally featured long hair in men, as a way of rebelling against social norms from previous years. Sideburns are also worn around the same time. Some of the most popular hairstyles for men include "Long and Luscious" hairstyles, mod haircuts, and "buzzcut" hairstyles popularized by action heroes like Steve McQueen. In the late 1970s, people went for cuts, ranging from crew cuts, to slashing breaks, to making love. This is primarily done for athletic appearance, and sideburns and facial hair are no longer stylish.

Makeup and cosmetics

Cosmetics in the 1970s reflect the contradictory role that comes from modern women. For the first time since 1900, make-up was chosen on a situational basis, rather than as a response to monolithic trends. The two mainstream vision of the era is the "natural look" of the day presented by American designers and Cosmopolitan magazines, and the aesthetics of the sex glamorous evening presented by European designers and fashion photographers. On the outskirts, punk and glam are also influential. The struggling cosmetics industry is trying to make a comeback, using new marketing and manufacturing practices.
