The film received negative reviews from critics. It currently holds a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 25 reviews. At Metacritic, the film has a score of 31 out of 100, based on 16 critics, showing "generally unfavorable reviews" from critics.
Television adaptation
On January 9, 2014, it was announced that Oprah Winfrey Network ordered a drama series based on the film. The show aired on September 9, 2014. Zulay Henao is the only actress from the film who re-enacted her role (Esperanza), which was rebooted for the series.
