Edna Adan Maternity Hospital is a non-profit charity hospital built in Hargeisa, Somaliland. The organization was founded by the former Somaliland foreign minister of northwest Somalia and former Somali lady Edna Adan Ismail. The hospital has its primary mission to provide better health care to people whose lives are traumatized by war, and also provides training for nurses, midwives and other health workers. In addition to services and facilities related specifically to maternal and infant health care, the hospital has diagnostic laboratory facilities and emergency blood banks, and offers diagnosis and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.
The hospital seeks to fill not only the urgent need for health care but also to provide - in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and WHO - training for a new generation of nurses and midwives who are eligible to provide RH care throughout the Somaliland region.
Another aspect of the hospital mission is to combat the practice of female circumcision, which is endemic in the region. Newborn mothers are counseled about the dangers of circumcising their child, but this tradition is deeply embedded in culture.

Histori
After the Somali Civil War, the entire Somaliland health infrastructure was effectively destroyed and there were few, if any, trained medical personnel left in the region. Maternal and infant mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Edna Adan donated her pension and other personal assets to build the hospital so she can help overcome the severe health crisis.
Needed, first of all, a place to build his hospital, he asked the government to land near the city center. They responded by offering 9600 square meters that had previously served as a garbage dump.
The construction of the hospital began on January 1, 1998 and when it developed, individual individuals, business people in Somaliland and elsewhere, as well as international organizations, also made valuable contributions that enabled the hospital to function on March 9, 2002.
Direct Relief International describes hospitals as the main referral center for Somaliland for obstetric emergencies. The hospital trains nurses and midwives under the watchful eye of Ny. Ismail, himself a trained nurse, whose residence is in the hospital.
