Natalie Denise Doud-Suleman (born Nadya Denise Suleman ; July 11, 1975), known as Octomom in the media, is an American media personality coming to international attention when she gave birth to twin-eight babies in January 2009. Oktuplets Suleman is only the second set of twins born to live in the United States. One week after their birth, they surpassed the survival rates of the previous world for a complete set of octuplets set by Octuplet Chukwu in 1998. The high birth circumstances caused controversy in assisted reproduction technology as well as investigations by the California Medical Board of fertility specialists which are involved.

The public reaction turned negative when it was discovered that Suleman already has six other youth and is unemployed and on a public assistance program. Suleman contains the older twins and six children through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Although at first he denied ever using public assistance, he asserted in April 2012 at NBC's Today show that he is indeed in public assistance.

Children

Suleman started IVF treatment in 1997, when he was 21, under Dr. Michael Kamrava, who later (October 2009) was excluded from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

In 2001 Suleman gave birth to her first child, a son. In 2002 she gave birth to her first daughter. Suleman continued IVF treatment which resulted in three further pregnancies (including a set of fraternal twins) for a total of six children (four sons, two daughters).

Octuplet

In 2008, Suleman stated that he had six embryos left over from previous IVF treatments. He explained that he asked all the remaining embryos to be transferred to his womb at one time. A woman her age usually has a maximum of two or three embryos transferred. Suleman states that part of the reason for trying the sixth pregnancy is that the frozen embryo is not destroyed. Fresh cycles are always done, although there are available frozen embryos that are stored with Dr. Kamrava. In June 2011, during the investigation of the California Medical Board, it was found that Kamrava had transferred twelve embryos, which the council found as an "extreme" departure from the standard of care. After reviewing the Suleman case, in combination with three other cases, the California Medical Board decided to revoke Kamrava's medical license, effective July 1, 2011. According to The New York Times Kamrava hid its assets in the Cook Islands, its asset protection trust legislation.

The news about the octuplet caused the sensation of the international media. Public responses are mostly negative, including death threats. There has been much public discussion about Suleman's decision to have an octuplet, including a small protest outside Suleman's home. Many expressed concern that Suleman's decision to more children would burden taxpayers through public support. Suleman claims to be able to independently support his children saying he plans to return to school to complete a master's degree in counseling, but records show that Suleman was unemployed after receiving a disability between 2002 and 2008, due to payments for back injuries suffered during the September 1999 riots.

In March 2009, Suleman bought a new home in La Habra, and many stories questioned that the twin eight would be released from the hospital, while Suleman expressed concern about losing their custody. In the early hours of April 1, on the day he will bring home the seventh octuplet, the troublemakers threw a baby seat through the rear window of his Toyota minivan. On April 14, 2009, all the children were at home with their mother and grandmother. Oktuplets celebrated their first birthday on January 26, 2010. Suleman told the People magazine: "I do not sleep much, about two or three hours a night, but I keep moving forward with my life and trying to be the best mother I can. "

In interview June 2011, Suleman reportedly told In Touch Weekly : "I hate babies, they make me disgusted... Obviously, I love them - but I really wish I did not have them." Suleman later stated that he did not give an interview with the magazine, but the recording of an audio recording appeared three weeks later.
