Natalie Denise Doud-Suleman (born Nadya Denise Suleman ; July 11, 1975), known as Octomom in the media, is an American media personality coming to international attention when she gave birth to twin-eight babies in January 2009. Oktuplets Suleman is only the second set of twins born to live in the United States. One week after their birth, they surpassed the survival rates of the previous world for a complete set of octuplets set by Octuplet Chukwu in 1998. The high birth circumstances caused controversy in assisted reproduction technology as well as investigations by the California Medical Board of fertility specialists which are involved.
The public reaction turned negative when it was discovered that Suleman already has six other youth and is unemployed and on a public assistance program. In 2008, Suleman stated that he had six embryos left over from previous IVF treatments. He explained that he asked all the remaining embryos to be transferred to his womb at one time. A woman her age usually has a maximum of two or three embryos transferred. Suleman states that part of the reason for trying the sixth pregnancy is that the frozen embryo is not destroyed. Fresh cycles are always done, although there are available frozen embryos that are stored with Dr. Kamrava. In June 2011, during the investigation of the California Medical Board, it was found that Kamrava had transferred twelve embryos, which the council found as an "extreme" departure from the standard of care.
