Single Mothers is a Canadian-based Canadian punk rock band formed in 2008. The band released their debut studio Negative Quality in 2014.

Canadian Andrew Thomson formed Single Mothers in 2008 after breaking up. The band released two EPs in the early years, Wild Party in 2010 and Single Mothers in 2011, the last of which was released through Secret Voice - a trace of Jacob Bannon Deathwish Inc. founded by Jeremy Bolm of TouchÃÆ'Ã… © AmorÃÆ'Â ©. Her self-titled EP was promoted with music videos for "Christian Girls" and "Baby". Single Mothers leads the US tour in June-August 2012 and supports the Tooth Piano and Title Fight in October-November 2012.

Thomson quit the Single Mothers in 2011 to mine gold in Swastika, Ontario. His father noticed that his son "drank too much and wandered around the wrong people in London, Ontario", and proposed the idea that he should look for gold with his extended family instead. Thomson commented: "I will go there for only a few months, but I end up loving it and staying for three years." During his time away from the band, Thomson also began writing and recording some solo material. In 2013, he released an EP with four songs entitled Honesty is a Confidence Problem through Secret Voice, and a self-titled EP of two songs (under the name Drew Thomson) through No Sleep Records in 2014. Although he later back to Single Mother, he intends to continue his solo career and mine gold.

In 2013, Thomson reunited with Single Mothers and the band began working on their debut studio album. The members teamed up with producer Joby J. Ford from the punk rock band The Bronx and were initially recorded at Big Game Lodge Studio himself in Los Angeles, California, but later recorded in Toronto, London and New York. The band also toured North America to support the Quicksand reunion tour in January 2013, England to support The Bronx in February 2013, various US dates in March 2013 and the US east coast with A Wilhelm Scream. After two years of work, Single Mothers released their debut studio Negative Quality on Hot Charity on October 7, licensing a record in Canada for Dine Alone Records. The band promoted the album with an online stream of the song "Marbles" in August 2014 and supported the North America August-October 2014 tour. A music video for "Half-Lit" was released a day after the release of the North American album.

Lyrics

The lyrics of vocalist Andrew Thomson take the attitude of those who look out and cover topics like religion, small town life, drugs, alcohol, sex and relationships, and people who are pretentious. In his review of "Christian Girls," Ian Cohen of Pitchfork recorded several musical themes in one song, remarking: "Within a span of 142 seconds, Andrew Thomson projected his irritation on a broad enough concept to make him fight fairly, but he could not find one explanation suitable for his inability to get some after breaking down the whole process of dating ('This is not a date, just coffee!'), human pride ('Jealous attention to those who can get it/Something like coming second') and religion "Thomson's vocal style is influenced by Bear vs Shark, The Hold Steady, The Replacements, The Streets, and Conor Oberst.
