Good enough parent is a concept derived from the work of D. W. Winnicott, in an attempt to provide support for what he calls "normal parental voice instinct... a stable and healthy family".

The extension of his championship from "good good mommy... dutiful mum", the idea of a pretty good parent is designed on the one hand to defend the ordinary mom and dad against what Winnicott sees as an ever-growing intrusion threat. family of professional expertise; and on the other hand to compensate for the danger of idealization built into Kleinian articulation of 'good objects' and 'good mothers', emphasizing not the parenting environment that parents actually provide for the child.

Disillusionment

The key function of good parenting is to provide an important background to enable the growing frustration of children with parents and the world, without undermining their livelihood and the ability to accept reality (external and internal). By surviving the anger and frustration of the child with the required disappointment, a good enough parent will enable him to connect with them in a sustainable and more realistic way. As Winnicott puts it, it is "the provision of a good-enough environment" that allows children to "cope with the great shocks of omnipotence". Without such provisions, family interactions can be based on fantasy ties, in retreats of a false self-proclaimed relationship and a cutting-edge of sustainable ability to use parents to foster the sustained emotional growth offered by well-to-do parents.
