Californication is an American comedy-drama television series created by Tom Kapinos, which airs for seven seasons on Showtime from August 13, 2007 through June 29, 2014. The event follows New Yorker Hank Moody (David Duchovny), a troubled novelist who moved to California and suffered a writer's block. Drug abuse, abuse, and abuse make it difficult to connect with his longtime lover Karen (Natascha McElhone) and their daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin). Hank struggles to find goals in his life as he passes many chances, finally making the right decision for happiness.
Other major figures of the event are Hank's best friend and agent, Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler), and Charlie's wife, Marcy (Pamela Adlon). Recurring themes are sex, drugs, and rock and roll, all of which are regularly displayed, as well as the seedier side of Los Angeles. The event has been nominated for several awards and won several, including winning two Emmy Awards (nominated for two others) and one Golden Globe Award (nominated for five others).

Showtime updated Californication for the third season, premiered Sunday 27 September 2009 at 10 pm.
The show is integrated with rock culture references. It often offends Warren Zevon and features Henry Rollins in guest appearances; several episode titles, such as "Filthy Lucre" and "Turn the Page", alluding to the names of albums and songs (Sex Pistols' "Filthy Lucre Live" and Bob Seger "Turn the Page" respectively). Hank's lawyer in Season 4 called Abby Rhoads; His first three novels, South Heaven , Season at Abyss and God Hates Us All , are all named after the Slayer album. The Crack the Sky and Blood Mountain books by Richard Bates are also the names of two Mastodon albums. A Little Crazy Little Thing Called Love, based on God Hates Us All, was named after a song by Queen rock band from their album My Game. The Segment before The Opening Theme is an intro to the song The Stooges, "I Got a Right".
Season 1
Season 1 (August 13 - October 29, 2007) follows Hank and other leading figures in the months leading up to Karen's wedding planned for Bill, a Los Angeles publisher. Hank wallowed in self-loathing after the release of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, the dramatically altered and watery adaptation of the film - yet commercially popular from his latest novel, God Hates Us All.
Hank spends most of his time drinking and not writing. One day she picked up a younger woman in a bookstore; after they had sex, he found out that he was the daughter of Bill, 16, Mia. Mia proceeds to harass Hank during her visit to her family. He used the threat of illegal sex charges to blackmail his stories that he graduated as his own for his high school creative writing class.
The death of Hank's father pushed Hank to a drink and a sexual encounter with Karen. After the funeral, Hank stays in New York to finish a script for a new novel. Upon returning to L.A., he believes the original copy will be lost when he is hijacked the car, but Mia has previously stolen the pot, and now he takes the credit for itself and tries to publish it. On the wedding day of Karen and Bill, Hank chose not to be selfish and accept the situation so as not to spoil her lover's wedding day. But that night, when he and Becca left the reception, Karen ran out and jumped into her car, presumably to continue living together.
On June 3, 2008, Showtime released the Season 1 soundtrack Temptation: Music From The Showtime Series Californication , featuring music from the original series. Including artists are The Rolling Stones, Peeping Tom, My Morning Jacket, The Doors, Tommy Stinson, Bob Dylan, Harvey Hazard, Madeleine Martin, Gus Black, Mexican institute of sound, Warren Zevon, The Heavy, Champion, Steve Earle, Elton John , and two original songs made for performances by Tyler Bates and Tree Adams.
Season 2
In Season 2 (September 28 - December 14, 2008), Hank and Karen's relationship seems successful, Becca looks happy again, and their house is on the market when they plan to move to New York. Hank got a vasectomy and attended a party thrown by Sonja, a woman who had sex with him in Season 1. A mistake and an argument with an annoying police officer landed Hank in jail, where he met world famous record producer Lew Ashby, Hank's commission to write his biography.

The circumstances caused him to enter the porn industry, as he became the agent/paternal-figure of a porn star named Daisy, and spent most of his wife and wife, Marcy, his nest, paying for the aristocratic pornographic Vaginatown (a take Chinatown ), starring Daisy. After the party, Hank notices that Ashby's longtime boyfriend, the escaped man, finally reappears. Hank then heads to Ashby's room, finding him with a girl and a cocaine. After Hank convinces him to revive the relationship, Ashby snorts some of what he believes to be cocaine (but actually the heroin he gets from a pile of drugs at the beginning of the party) and an overdose. This incident is believed to be a tribute to Mia Wallace's overdose in Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino.
Hank completed Ashby's biography. Charlie eventually works at a BMW dealer in the Valley, introducing himself as Chuck Runkle. Sonja's baby arrived; it's biracial, which proves that Hank can not be a father. Hank and Karen slowly move towards reuniting. Karen was offered a job in New York and Hank was happy to go there with her. But when Damien apologized to Becca and they reconciled, Hank decided that it would be wrong to take Becca from L.A. and stay there with him while Karen starts her job in New York. The season closes by plane Karen leaves for New York and Hank and Becca walk on the Venetian sidewalk.
Season 3
Season 3 (September 27 - December 13, 2009) begins when Season 2 ends. The main elements include Hank being a creative writing teacher and the various shenanigans he entered when released on college campus.
The father/son relationship between Hank and Becca becomes clearly more mood as he progresses through his teenage years. Hank continues to question his father's ability when he sees his daughter becoming more like him than he wants to be. She also continues to complicate her relationship with Becca's mother, her old love Karen, with various relationships with women of all ages. Hank's various relationships included a female student, his teaching assistant and the dean's wife, all in love with Hank.
At the end of the season, Hank repeatedly experienced a nightmare floating in the pool, drinking heavily while speaking with his most recent conquest, which swam naked around him; Karen and Becca watch the pool. In fact, Mia returned to Hank's home and invited the family to the paperback book release. At the party afterwards, Hank talks with manager Mia, who is also her new boyfriend, who says she knows about Mia's history with Hank and offers Hank the way out by coming clean to the press about how the novel came about. But since it will affect Karen and Becca, Hank must refuse.
When they meet again, the men fight and the manager/girlfriend threatens to call the police. Hank rushes home to Karen and confesses that he slept with Mia when he was 16. Karen is hopelessly out of control, arguments burst into the street, and a police car arrives when Hank tries to calm Karen. When an officer takes Hank from behind, Hank ties it up and is bundled into the back of the car when Becca runs out to try to stop the police. The last scene shows Hank's dream sequence in the pool again, drinking from the bottle. He fell from his seat and dropped his drink. The last shot shows Hank sinking as the bottle is still visible.
Season 4
Season 4 (January 9, 2011 - March 27, 2011) filming begins on April 19, 2010. Guest stars include Carla Gugino as Hank Abby's lawyer; ZoÃÆ' Â «Kravitz as Becca's new friend who took her to join the band ZoÃÆ'«, Queens of Dogtown; Addison Timlin as Sasha Bingham, a movie star; and Rob Lowe as Eddy Nero, a famous actor who wants to play Hank's character in a movie. Zakk Wylde, singer and guitarist for the Black Label Society and former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, has a cameo as a guitar shopkeeper in episode 2, the title, "Suicide Solution", comes from Ozzy Osbourne's song. MÃÆ'¶tley CrÃÆ'¼e drummer Tommy Lee also has a cameo in the episode "Lights, Camera, Asshole" where he performed his solo version of the MÃÆ'¶tley CrÃÆ'¼e Home Sweet Home song, on a piano in a bar at the end of the episode. Michael Ealy plays a new love interest for Karen in four episodes, and Madeline Zima returns as Mia for four episodes.
The story takes 72 hours after Hank is captured at the end of Season 3 and revolves around the life of Hank who is completely destroyed. His secrets have been revealed: the world knows that he wrote Shit & amp; Punching, and he sleeps with underage Mia. Karen was disgusted and Becca was disappointed, so Hank stayed at the hotel. Season 4 follows her new legal issues, such as her lawyer's attempts to free her from rape allegations, plus the adaptation of the movie "Fucking & Punching" and her sexual engagement with Sasha and Abby. Other growing storylines including Charlie who studied vasectomy may have failed, Marcy moved with a film producer and learned that she was pregnant by Charlie, Becca joined an all-female rock band, and Karen found a new girlfriend.
On January 11, 2011, Season 4 Soundtrack was released. Exclusive songs include Tommy Lee's solo version of "Home Sweet Home" and three stone covers from the band on the Queens of Dogtown screen. Other artists on the soundtrack are Shooter Jennings & amp; Hierophant, Eagles of Death Metal, Better Than Ezra, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Magnetic Monster vs. Adrian Young, Cracker, The Soundtrack Our Lives, Warren Zevon, and Gregory Alan Isakov. The soundtrack was produced jointly by Nora Felder and Budd Carr, the event's music superintendent.
Season 5
The show returns to Showtime for its fifth season in January 2012. Creator Tom Kapinos says that the show needs to take a completely new direction to keep it fresh. The narrative lasts 2 years and 9 months after Season 4, almost at the end of Hank's probation. Hank has since made New York his home, but he's back in Los Angeles for a short business-related visit. The problem of his family finally extends it. Karen is married to Professor Bates, Becca is 19 years old in college and has a new girlfriend, and Marcy married Stu Beggs, sharing custody of his son Stuart with Charlie. Hank meets with rapper-turned into actor Samurai Apocalypse, who wants Hank to write a screenplay for a movie starring Samurai. Hank initially refused the job, but eventually wrote "Santa Monica Cop" because he needed money. Hank had difficulty working with the Samurai, and their tense relationships led to some unpleasant situations. Hank was disgusted with Hollywood after his book God Hates Us All was adapted into a movie he hated and was unhappy with the prospect of working in other movies.
Season 6
Season 6 begins on January 13, 2013. The storyline revolves around Hank's relationship with Faith (played by Maggie Grace), whom he met at the rehab facility, in line with Hank's artistic participation in the music industry. Initially, Hank reluctantly agrees to rehab, not because of drug dependence, but more because of depression over his role in ex-girlfriend Carrie committed suicide at the end of Season 5. After being thrown by her, Carrie, emotionally destroyed, Hank's drug as herself, but Hank is the only thing that woke up, caused him to lose control of his alcohol for feeling so guilty. At this point, Hank's family and best friends intervened, sending him to rehab.
Faith is a famous rockstar groupie/muse who was in rehab dealing with the death of a recent rockstar with whom he was involved, eventually becoming Hank's inspiration. Faith and Hank seem to be made to each other as they take the bus to follow the Atticus Fetch tour (played by Tim Minchin), a rockstar who hired Hank to write for him during the season, but in the end Hank is too weak to move from Karen and although it seems the relationship they had walked, he left Faith and went back to see Karen.
Season 7
Production for the seventh season begins in 2013. In December 2013, Showtime announces that Californication will end its operation after the seventh season. Mary Lynn Rajskub plays a neurotic writer, whom Charlie Runkle uses as a client. Michael Imperioli plays Rath, the television producer who works for Hank.
On June 4, 2013, actress Mercedes Masohn announced she would have guest roles as Amy Taylor Walsh, a TV star who pleaded for Hank's help to finally put her in an uncomfortable and compromising position. Amy seems to have a bond with Season 4 character Sasha Bingham. Roger Howarth plays Karen yoga teacher.
Oliver Cooper plays Levon, Hank's son from a previous relationship; Heather Graham plays Lewon's mother, named Julia. Comedian Jim Florentine plays a pimp, and Rob Lowe repeats his role as movie star Eddie Nero.

The critical reaction to Californication is generally favorable, with a rating of 70 on Metacritic. However, American critic Nathan Rabin gave Season 1 the "F" rating of The A.V. Club , calling it "unbearable".
There was a reaction from a conservative group that opposed the explicit nature of the program. Conservative columnist Andrew Bolt criticized the program in the Australian newspaper Herald Sun for a pilot's opening dream scene, where a nun conducts oral sex on Hank Moody in a church. The Australian Christian Lobby managing director Jim Wallace also called for a boycott, not just from Network Ten, but all advertisers who advertise during the show, in response to scenes where Hank and Sonja smoke marijuana, have sex, and vomit. When Network Ten premiered Season 2, Christian fundamentalist Salt Shakers led an e-mail campaign to advertisers, asking them to withdraw their ads. This resulted in 49 companies pulling their ads, including the show's main sponsor, Just Car Insurance.
Major performances and actor David Duchovny were both nominated for Golden Globes in 2007; Duchovny won a major actor award, but the award for the best TV series in this category goes to Extras .

The Red Hot Chili Peppers filed a lawsuit on November 19, 2007 against Showtime Networks on behalf of the series, which is also the name of the 1999 band album and hit single. They claim in the claim that the series "is a false origin, and has caused and continues to cause possible confusion, error, and fraud such as sources, sponsorship, affiliations, and/or connections in the public mind". Pointing to Dani California, characters appearing in both series and three songs by Red Hot Chili Peppers (including Californication) and confusion while shopping for their albums and from the series soundtracks, the Claims ask for unspecified damage, and requested that new names be found for the show.
Showtime Networks argues that the band did not coined the term Californication . They showed that the term appeared in print in Time magazine in 1972, in an article titled The Great Wild Californicated West, while producer Tom Kapinos cited inspiration as coming from a sticker the bumper he saw in the 70s that read "Do not Californicate Oregon". Canadian art-rock band Rheostatics released an album titled Whale Music in 1992, with a song titled "California Dreamline". In this song, Californication appears in the phrase "Californication, spooning in the dry sand".
Kim Walker, head of intellectual property at Pinsent Masons, stated that the band should register Californication as a trademark. Instead, the only application for it was filed in April 2007 in the US, by Showtime. The sign is not yet registered. Walker also stated:
In the United States, the name of the character and the title of the work are subject only to the protection of the trademark, not copyright protection.
According to an article on the Hollywood News website The Wrap in 2011, the lawsuit was settled out of court.
Views Count
Final Season 2 attracted 615,000 viewers, with a combined total of 937,000 for the night, retaining less than 50% from the start of the season's end. Dexter . Season 3 continues to gain audiences, and the show was quickly taken for the fourth season by Showtime.
Legacy
The White Famous TV series, aired in October 2017 and co-created by Californication creator Tom Kapinos, featured some of the first secondary characters introduced in Californication, such as Stu Beggs (played by Stephen Tobolowsky) and Kali ( played by Meagan Good).
