The Google Glass lactation trial program was developed in collaboration with the Australian Breastfeeding Association and the Melbourne technology company Small World Social. This is the world's first hands-free program on breastfeeding basics and tutorials using wearable computing tools.

The trial lasted 7 weeks, beginning on March 1 and ending on April 13, 2014. There were five newborns and their babies in the trial, fifteen volunteer counselors from the Australian Breastfeeding Association, and seven members of the project team from Small World Social. Counselors are in five states in Australia. The counselors are certified in lactation consultation, and located away from mothers like Perth, Western Australia, 3,500 kilometers away. Although physically away from the mother, the counselor provides support using video calls with Google Glass, live on demand.

Impact

According to media comments, breastfeeding projects show potential devices that can be used to provide a way for people to provide health and family support services at great distances. The positive uses shown by such devices contradict the widespread criticism of the privacy issues of such devices. An article in Vice motherboard magazine says, "Google Glass, whether secured or not, survives fairly from criticism, largely because many cases of early use have been, well, somewhat creepy. So nice to see Glass used for unique positive purposes, as well as the Australian Breeding Breeding Feeding Support Project. "Other journalists and commentators also mention profitable tests and technologies that innovative applications can use. Australian Broadcasting Corporation journalist/broadcaster Penny Johnston from the Babytalk radio program commented, "Google Glass if you think about it, it's best to train someone in breastfeeding: if you are holding or breastfeeding a baby, imagine a camera mounted in your glasses and look down. there you have the world's best view to check your baby's hook and breastfeeding techniques! Participants

The trial participants found that the technology approach was helpful. Sarah-Jane Bailey, one of the mothers involved in this project, is eager to participate with her son, Patrick, after struggling to breastfeed her previous children. "Every time I have trouble with breastfeeding I get a video calling a breastfeeding counselor who can then see what I see and help me fix the key," Sarah-Jane Bailey says "able to call and have that support whenever I need it, priceless. "

The Australian Advisory Extension Consultant (ABA) is located in five states in Australia.
